Two days, short climbs, magnificent views and lots of fun in the saddle await you on the Prümtal Cycle Route. You start in Stadtkyll and finish on the Sauer in Minden where you can continue your adventure along the Sauer Cycle Path, if you want to ;)
Before I make your mouth water, I must unfortunately point out the current transport situation. I always prefer to travel by bus and train to the adventures in my Collections. Due to the flood damage to the railway line through the Eifel, the towns near the starting point aren’t accessible by train at the moment. You can reach Stadtkyll by car, but until all rail traffic in the Eifel is restored, you’ll have to find other ways of getting there and back. When the line is intact again, you can take the train to Dahlem (Eifel), continue by bike to Stadtkyll and then start your journey on the Prümtal Cycle Path. Between April and the end of October, another option is the cycle bus line 777 from the Moselle Valley to Gerolstein, a short ride away from Stadtkyll.
But enough about the journey, now it's time to get on your bike! A colourful sign with the inscription Prümtal shows you the way, in case you run out of phone signal. Cycling paths and quiet country roads, as well as a former railway line on the second stage, take you almost 100 kilometres (62 mi) through the Eifel. You’ll almost always be close to the Prüm, the second longest river in the Eifel, and follow it until it flows into the Sauer at the German-Luxembourg border.
You ride along well-maintained roads and paths the whole way, but your bike should be suitable for climbs and fast descents. There are plenty of ups and downs through the low mountain ranges, even if the Eifel is not comparable to the Alps. So check your brakes and gears before the Tour and you'll get from Stadtkyll to Minden in no time. Maybe you'd like to add the Sauer and Moselle cycle paths to your itinerary too – the cycling possibilities here are almost endless!
