Baden-Baden is a cosmopolitan city that entices visitors from all over the world. Attractions such as the casino, the festival theatre, the many museums and – last but not least – Sophienstrasse, the classy shopping mile with its numerous luxury boutiques, draw a wealthy clientele. However, the spa town of Baden-Baden owes its origins to the hot thermal springs that have been enjoyed since Roman times. The traditional Friedrichsbad Spa and the modern Caracalla-Therme promise relaxation and wellness for everyone.
Not to be forgotten is the city's exceptionally beautiful location. The northern Black Forest is right on its doorstep and several impressive natural monuments are in the immediate vicinity. On the Baden-Baden Panoramaweg (Panorama Trail), this contrast between city and nature, between old monuments and modern architecture, and between wide vistas and lonely forest paths, offers you a very special experience.
During its four rather short stages, the Panoramaweg circles the entire city on a 45-kilometre (28 mi) journey on foot that takes you to all the important sights. Although a good part of the trail leads through the forest, fascinating views open up again and again over, not only Baden-Baden, but also to the rural suburbs and down to the Rhine plain. This diversity earned the Panoramaweg the title of ‘Germany's most beautiful hiking trail’ in 2020. So if you don't have any luck at the casino, you're sure to find it on this hike.
The ideal time for the Panoramaweg is from May to June. This is when the rhododendrons in the arboretum – and at the Geroldsau waterfall – are in full bloom and the rose garden also unfolds its full fragrant splendour. Before that, the blossoming fruit trees create a special ambience. In high summer, you can enjoy the longer shady forest sections and refresh your feet in the cool streams.
Both the stage start and end points are easy to reach using the city’s buses, if you’re staying overnight in Baden-Baden. If the accommodation in the city is too expensive for you or you prefer wilder surroundings, no problem. Along the Black Forest High Road you will find great accommodation, from luxury hotels to modestly priced guesthouses. Bus line X45 runs to and from Baden-Baden about once an hour.
Are you in the mood for a bit more of the Black Forest? The district of Baden-Baden borders the national park and the X45 takes you directly to the newly built visitor centre at Ruhestein. Here you can visit unspoilt places and get back to nature.
So don't play with your luck in Baden-Baden, but experience the city on foot!

You start your panoramic tour in front of the sophisticated Kurhaus. The bus stop in front of it is only served by the inner-city line 208. Alternatively, you can also start at Leopoldsplatz, which is barely 200 meters away, especially if you are arriving from the train station, which is about six kilometers…
From Leopoldsplatz you can take bus lines 204 or 205 to the Merkurwald stop and thus to the valley station of the Merkurbergbahn in a short time. If you haven't visited the summit of Mercury the day before, you can still take the opportunity now. You always have time for that.
You follow the forest path…

On the longest stage of the Panoramaweg you will discover a piece of the Black Forest. Although you mostly walk through the forest, there are also other beautiful vantage points.
You take bus line 201 and drive back to the last stop in Oberbeuern. On the first part of the way you will pass the Bußacker…
After you have taken the 204 bus back to the Geroldsauer Mühle, another stage awaits you, which mainly leads through the forest. But it is precisely here that several rocky outcrops with spectacular viewpoints await you.
Experience has shown that beautiful views are usually found at the top of the mountains…
