You don't have to go far for a relaxing hike along quietly babbling rivers, among picturesque landscapes and between interesting buildings. There is plenty to discover around Paderborn and the small, tranquil towns outside Bielefeld. From impressive churches to romantic half-timbered houses, majestic castles to idyllic lakes, and rivers that wind beautifully along the paths and roads – there’s always somewhere new to explore. On these eight walks between 5 to 12 kilometres (3.1 and 7.4 mi) in length, we show you how Paderborn’s nature and culture go hand in hand.
Right at the gates of Bielefeld you’ll find three walks that lead you through gorgeous parks, fragrant forests and open fields, past picturesque bodies of water and into the city. In addition to a water mill that is still in working order, you can also visit the magnificent Sparrenburg castle. You’ll discover the romance of half-timbered houses on the historic Hövelhof hiking trail and near Wiedenbrück.
Around Rietberg you can follow in the footsteps of the former counts and stroll from the town centre to pretty ponds. Higher up is the Osterbergweg near Lügde. But here, too, you are never too far from civilisation. Then there’s Paderborn with its colourful bouquet of varied city adventures.
