From the water dragon to the bleating goat, romantic green valley to the barren heath – the Teutoburg Forest offers unparalleled natural diversity. It’s therefore not surprising that you can discover all kinds of rare animals and plants here, species that have adapted to the relatively unique habitats. On ten wonderful circular hikes of between 5 and 17 kilometres (3.1 and 10.5 mi) in length, we take you into nature and show you the most unspoilt corners of the Teutoburg Forest.
You'll meet a few cheeky goats actively tending the landscape around the heights of Dalhausen. Cattle and pigs, on the other hand, graze contentedly along the NABU nature trail near Schwelentrup, which informs and entertains with interesting facts about the flora and fauna on its display boards. The unique area around the Moosheide is completely different: this former military training area is enchanting with its delicate purple heather, which is especially splendid in August.
If you want to go a little higher, we recommend the tour to Velmerstot or Rodeneckturm, where you’ll find the water dragon. There’s also plenty of water and woodland on the Blueberry route around the famous Externsteine and, of course, on the Pivitker water trail. Get out there and enjoy nature to the fullest!
