Devon grenst in het westen aan Cornwall en in het oosten aan de graafschappen Somerset en Dorset. Het is het enige Engelse graafschap dat twee gescheiden kustlijnen heeft: in het noorden grenst het aan het Kanaal van Bristol, in het zuiden aan Het Kanaal. Het landschap van Devon bestaat vooral uit heuvels. Tussen de kustlijnen in het noorden en zuiden ligt een golvend landbouwgebied. Er zijn twee nationale parken: Dartmoor, dat geheel in Devon ligt, en Exmoor, dat voor een deel ook in Somerset ligt.

A walk along the River Avon and through the "moors" above South Brent. The big surprise along the way were the many stray pigs. We had never experienced that. Fortunately, they are very busy turning the ground in search of food.

Wistman's Wood is one of three secluded high-altitude oak forests in Dartmoor. It would be mysterious. Something like the woods in Lord of the rings or Harry Potter. In retrospect it seems a bit exaggerated to me, but it was a pleasant walk.
