Glide and enjoy – cross-country skiing in the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena

Collection by Urlaub in Österreich

Breathe in the cold mountain air, make a powerful turn and glide through the snow-covered mountain landscape. The high peaks tower all around and make you forget the stresses of everyday life. Out here you are alone with your thoughts, gradually getting into your groove and enjoying the dreamlike landscape: welcome to the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena.

A superbly developed cross-country skiing network with over 130 kilometres (80 mi) awaits you. Sounds like plenty of choice, doesn't it? In this Collection, we present seven particularly beautiful trails that offer loads of fun for beginners and advanced skiers alike.

The Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena comprises seven small but beautiful villages in the Tyrolean Außerfern on the Austrian side of the Zugspitze. The region is certified as a Cross-Country Ski Holidays Destination, which promises you the best quality for your cross-country skiing trip. As well as the trails, the hotels here are specially designed for the needs of winter sports enthusiasts. Are you new to cross-country skiing? Then you can, of course, rent the necessary equipment in the Zugspitz Arena and book a course at a ski school. You can find an overview of the services (in German) here: zugspitzarena.com/de/Winter-Erlebnis/Skischulen-Skiverleih.

The trails are prepared for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. Many are laid out as circuits, so you can do several rounds at once. Often, there are also connections to other trails, allowing you to extend your training session should the mood take you. The Zugspitz Arena simply offers you loads of variety and even more fun, while a cosy restaurant is never far away. It's not for nothing that the region was awarded the 2021-23 cross-country skiing seal of approval by the state of Tyrol. The award is given for cross-country ski trails that, among other things, have an average snow cover of ten centimetres for 80 days.

To ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time on the slopes, you should follow a few rules of conduct. Please only enter the trails with cross-country skis, as pedestrians and dogs are not allowed on the slopes. The skiing here is safe, but if you need help, you can call the Alpine emergency number 140.

Now there's nothing left to do but check the snow report, pack the right clothes and head for the Zugspitz Arena.

  • A11 – Zunftwanderloipe Bichlbach

    Cross-Country Skiing Highlight

This easy trail runs at the foot of the Kohlberg. The 2,000m belongs to the main ridge of the Ammergau Alps and offers you the best accompaniment along the route. Let's start at the train station in Bichlbach. The 5.1 kilometer route takes you through the beautiful mountain landscape to Lähn - and back again. You can choose between classic or skating.

Just got really warm? Then you can simply combine the route with the Zugspitz Arena trail to Lermoos (easy) or the C10 Mähberg trail (challenging). The A11 is therefore ideally suited for beginners, shorter training sessions or even for a larger lap - depending on your mood and the mood of the day.

In Bichlbach you then have the opportunity for a cozy stop in a warm dining room.

  • A18 – Oberfeldloipe Bichlbach

    Cross-Country Skiing Highlight

The sun makes the blanket of snow glisten, the air is crispy cold - high time to get out and get active. How about a round of cross-country skiing on the A18 in Bichlbach, for example? The 1.2 km long trail is classified as easy in terms of difficulty and is therefore also ideal for beginners. Especially nice: On the cross-country ski trail you can really soak up the sun while you glide along. Since the circuit is quite short, you can do several laps at once.

If you want to run even longer, you can then add the C10 Mähberg trail to Lähn and expand your training a bit. However, this route is aimed at experienced runners. In any case, plan enough energy for it.

Access to the A18 trail is at the information stand in Bichlbach in the churchyard.

  • A20 – Moosloipe Berwang

    Cross-Country Skiing Highlight

The 2.6 km long Moosloipe is a fantastic circuit in a quiet, sunny location - ideal for a clear winter's day. The route in the Berwanger Moos is easy and awaits you with different rounds and variants. It is the easiest trail in the Berwangertal and is therefore ideal for beginners. But even experienced runners can have fun on the A20 and simply do a few extra laps. The trail is groomed in a classic way, with a skating track also running parallel to it.

A fantastic lap to start the season again, improve your technique or simply glide relaxed through the fantastic mountain world. Grab your skis, let the sun shine on your (hopefully sunscreened) face and enjoy the movement in the dreamy winter wonderland. The entrance to the trail is at the Mooslift in Berwang.

If you want to warm up afterwards, you will find the Kaminstube close by at the Thanellerkar lift.

  • A1 – Tummebichlloipe Variante Rot

    Cross-Country Skiing Highlight

Off through the moss! This easy circular trail leads through the beautiful landscape of the partially drained Lermoose up to the Tummebichl. But don't worry, the ascent is quite humane, the mountain only rises about 30 meters above the valley floor. Perfect for a training lap - and depending on your speed, you may even start to sweat with the low altitude difference.

The Ehrwald valley basin offers you a lot of variety on your round. The trail is surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Wetterstein mountains, the Mieminger chain, the Lechtal Alps and the Ammergau Alps in the northwest. So there's plenty to see while you're doing your lap(s).

The entrance to the 5.1-kilometre-long Tummebichloipe can be found on Untere Tanne street below Schladgasse.

  • B4 – Ehrwald Zugspitzloipe

    Cross-Country Skiing Highlight

You can look forward to a lot of variety on this 2.7-kilometer loop. The Ehrwald Zugspitzloipe leads you up and down through the beautiful landscape, it is not for nothing that the trail is classified as moderately difficult. So you should already have some practice on the cross-country skis in order to be able to really enjoy the trail.

The route starts out quite flat, but then gradually climbs before descending back to the starting point. Partly you drive through the forest, with its snow-covered treetops, in the open area you have a brilliant view of the snow-covered mountain giants - a perfect winter wonderland. The entrance to the trail is at the Ponöfen car park.

If the trail makes you want more, then you can extend your training session with the A8 trail (easy).
