Cologne is a particularly multifaceted city, even when it comes to nature. The 160-kilometre (100 mi) long-distance hiking trail ‘Kölnpfad’ (Cologne Trail) leads you over 11 stages around this beautiful city, roaming its green outskirts.

On the well-marked trail, you walk through idyllic parks, dense forests, across wide meadows and vibrant fields. The lakeland in the north, the Königsforst including the Wahner Heide reserve in the east and the Rhine meadows in the south are just some of the many highlights on this route. You can reach each stage by public transport, so you can also walk the trail in sections if you like. It's like a short holiday in the middle of the city!

The third stage of the Kölnweg is also very varied and interesting. On the north-western edge of Cologne, it leads through a water-rich and sometimes quite rural area. But the urban side is also present, as two motorways and several rail tracks meet in this beautiful area.

On this approximately eleven-kilometer stage you hike through charming nature reserves and the wonderful Rheinauen. And if you feel like it, you can take the Rhine ferry to Hitdorf for little money and visit the town with the small harbor.

With the S-Bahn line 11 you reach the Worringen train station

This stage is very contrasting compared to the others. Nevertheless, it is no less attractive, because it impressively shows the many facets of the city: nature reserves, industry and the impressive port area.

On the seventh stage of the Cologne path, you hike almost exclusively through the forest and on beautiful forest paths. Unbelievable that Cologne can be so green.

It's hard to believe, but on this stage it even gets a little hilly. Today you hike one of the most beautiful stages of the Cologne path, because it is very varied and green and at the end there is even a castle. Here we go.

On this stage you hike through large parts of the Bergische Heideterrasse. And since Cologne/Bonn Airport is also in the middle of the heath, you can watch the planes taking off while hiking. Without getting wanderlust, of course, because if you can hike on the Cologne path, you wouldn't want to be anywhere
