Places for the soul, of longing and peace; places where you can clear your head. These are just some of the descriptions you could give the 43 Sauerland soul places – they are each very different. You’ll visit quarries, churches, hilltops, mighty trees, underground grottos, lakes and valleys. These places are impressive and hold extraordinary significance for the people living nearby – not only today, but also in the past. They are places to which people hike, where they can switch off and experience silence.

In this Collection, we introduce you to seven hikes that show you the soul places in Schmallenberg and Eslohe. Each route leads you along paths and teaches you about the history of the places. You get to know the mystical Hollenhaus, learn about the regeneration of a Kyrill area and visit the impressive Wilzenberg, a conical peak that can be seen from afar. This peak stands out from the landscape and is known as the Sauerland’s holy mountain. The St. Rochus Chapel and the Wormbach Church and its churchyard are also soul places, as is the Museum Square in Eslohe and the sculpture Stein-Zeit-Mensch on the WaldSkulpturenWeg. Some of the places are artistic, others legendary and some are also a little mysterious. They are all thought-provoking in their own way. So it's worth stopping for a while to enjoy the tranquillity.

The hikes are between 1 and 12 kilometres (0.6 and 7.4 mi) long, but all have the makings of an unforgettable day out. It's best to bring a picnic, because even though there are usually very cosy places to stop in the villages, a resting place in a shaded forest or on a mountain slope with an enchanting view awaits you on every hike. Most of the starting points can be reached by public transport or hiking buses. The best way to get about is by using the Schmallenberger Sauerland Card: public transport is free with the card and you also get a discount in many establishments. You can find more information at schmallenberger-sauerland.de/en/inform/schmallenberg-sauerland-card-1.

This attractive, eleven-kilometer loop starts at the foot of the Wilzenberg in the village of Grafschaft, a small town with an impressive history that stretches back almost a thousand years – at least as far as the monastery complex is concerned. Some of the hill forts on the Wilzenberg are much older

When storm Kyrill swept across the country in January 2007, Sauerland was also badly affected. But where there is destruction, there is also new life, and just a few weeks after the storm, a trail was marked in an area left to fend for itself. A ranger crawled between fallen tree trunks with a plastic
