Cavalls del Vent is a route in the Cadí-Moixeró natural park.

This adventure dates back to the 1990s. The keepers of eight refuges in the area would meet in the mountains and recount their adventures, inspiring them to create the Cavalls del Vent route.

They were all mountaineers in the off-season too, when the refuges were closed, and would meet in the Himalayas. In Nepal, it’s common to find prayer flags with drawings of the ‘wind horse’ (Lung-Ta in Tibetan). It symbolises the inner wind, the power of desire and striving towards a goal. On its back, it carries three flaming jewels that represent Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

When the keepers decided to unite their mountain refuges with a circular hiking route, they named it Cavalls del Vent (wind horse), with the Tibetan flag horse as its logo.

With 80 kilometres (49 mi) and 5,000 metres (16,400 ft) of elevation gain, this adventure is suitable for experienced hikers in good physical shape. It takes you through one of the most beautiful natural parks in Catalonia, the Cadí Moixeró. The Cadí and Moixeró mountain ranges join the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees. The park is best known for its most famous mountain, the Pedraforca. This magical peak gives rise to many legends and stories of witches. According to one, a king split the peak in two with a sword after an argument with several witches, giving Pedraforce its distinctive shape.

With eight refuges along the route, you can walk at a pace that suits you. I propose hiking for five days, covering an average of 15 kilometres (9 mi) and less than 1,000 metres (3,280 ft) of elevation gain per day.

Each stage ends at a refuge where you can have dinner, sleep and tuck into breakfast the next day. I advise booking in advance and ensuring that the restaurant is open when you go. You can check here: refusonline.com/en/online-map-reservations.

Cavalls del Vent has several access points to start the route. This Collection sets off from the Prat d'Aguiló refuge car park, as it’s easy to reach by car and lies close to the path.
