Neither the Netherlands nor Belgium are known for their high mountains. Despite this, you can still find some elevation gain if you know where to look. That’s why this Collection, together with LOWA Benelux, leads you on hilly adventures even in these low countries. We’ve collected a total of eight Tours that visit the highest points of the Netherlands and Belgium. One of the Tours – the adventure around the Amerongse Berg – we made in collaboration with the Thru-hiking Community (komoot.nl/user/thruhiking). Just like the other Tours, it’s an ideal area to train for your next long distance hike or hut trek in the mountains.
First, let’s test your knowledge. Do you know what the highest points of both countries are? To refresh your memory: the Netherlands has the Dreilandenpunt on the Vaalserberg. It has a summit at 322 metres (1,056 ft) above sea level and is only one step away from both Belgium and Germany.
Did you expect the highest point in Belgium to be directly on the other side of the border? Well, you'll have to climb a whole lot further south. The highest point in Belgium is Signal de Botrange in the Hoge Venen Nature Reserve. The summit is more than twice as high as the highest point in the Netherlands, at 694 metres (2,277 ft).
The Tours in this Collection are all medium to difficult. In view of the distances involved, allow half a day or a full day for your hike. All walks start near a train station or bus stop or you can drive – the routes are loops. There are also often accommodation options like hotels, B&Bs and campsites nearby, so you can make it a real getaway.
Make sure you have weather-appropriate clothes, because the conditions are often quite unpredictable in the Netherlands and Belgium. Take enough water and something to eat, although on most walks you will pass a restaurant or café where you can take a break.
Always wear good shoes for these walks. LOWA Benelux makes great hiking boots and they’re particularly great for longer walks. They use their proven fit, and are always working on new and better concepts. LOWA's mission is to offer customers an excellent outdoor experience. As a result, the range consists of shoes for all types of hikes, from casual trainers to technical alpine shoes.

The Zwarte Berg, or actually Zwarteberg, is only a few meters lower than the nearby Kemmelberg from Tour komoot.nl/tour/842772254 . The latter is 156 meters and the Zwarte Berg measures 152 meters.
