Thanks to the conservation measures of recent decades, Germany’s Emscher and Lippe rivers and their tributaries are alive with spectacular nature. Wildlife and plantlife now thrive.

In this Collection, we go on a nature discovery by bike and follow the blue-green network of rivers and streams. There are lush green strips in the middle of the city, wildlife on former industrial wastelands and unspoilt floodplain landscapes as far as the eye can see. Life happens everywhere, even where we don't expect it. But what conditions does it need, what do people contribute to it, and what threatens it? How do we benefit from it?

Each Tour follows its own main theme on a low-incline cycle tour on quiet paths, with suitable stops, examples of nature to marvel at and understand, and links to further information.

This episode of our podcast "Redefluss" offers a nice introduction to the topic of nature and species conservation. EGLV Board Chair Prof. Dr Uli Paetzel in conversation with Dr Josef Tumbrinck from NABU: redefluss-podcast.podigee.io/4-josef-tumbrinck

Live and let live – we welcome all those who explore the natural spaces along the Emscher and Lippe rivers with respect and consideration! Plants and animals thrive best when we leave them sanctuaries and places to retreat. And for us humans, too, observation from a respectful distance is the best choice.

The people from the Emscher region know that: guests who are quite surprised "how green it is here". The grey, coal-dusty area has long been history. And now the “Köttelbecken” are disappearing too. Instead, you can experience your blue-green wonder more and more often – in the middle of the city.

River landscapes are always attractive to people and animals and are literally the origins of life. Especially through us humans, these landscapes experience a strong change again and again, which also changes them as a habitat. This tour along the Lippe makes it possible to experience such changes over

Its origin at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest and the nearby Halterner mountains do not change anything: the Lippe is a lowland river. Typical of such rivers are floodplains and backwaters (separated former river bends), flooding of the surrounding area at high water and a high groundwater level. Place
