De provincie Vlaams Brabant ontstond nadat de oude provincie Brabant gesplitst werd langs de taalgrens in een Vlaams deel (Vlaams-Brabant), een Waals deel (Waals-Brabant). Door de verfransing van Brussel tijdens de 19de en vroege 20ste eeuw kregen 19 gemeentes in de agglomeratie in de loop der tijd een officieel tweetalig statuut. Deze gemeenten maken sinds de splitsing van Brabant niet langer deel uit van een provincie, en vormen samen het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest. Deze scheiding voltrok zich op 1 januari 1995. De provincie Vlaams-Brabant behoort tot het Vlaams Gewest, de provincie Waals-Brabant tot het Waals gewest. Het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest wordt volledig omsloten door Vlaams-Brabants grondgebied.
De totale oppervlakte van de provincie bedraagt 2.106,13 km², de hoofdstad van de provincie is Leuven. De provincie heeft een langgerekte vorm en meet van oost naar west ongeveer 90 km, van noord naar zuid bedraagt de afstand in vogelvlucht ongeveer 40 km.
Het hoogste punt van de provincie is gelegen nabij het golfterrein van Sint-Genesius-Rode en bedraagt 142 m.
