Are you ready for exciting, historical discovery Tours near Berlin? Follow in the footsteps of the German writer, journalist and critic Theodor Fontane and discover the Mark Brandenburg, a historic region during the Roman Empire, through his eyes.

We’ve put together nine walks that take you to places that attracted Fontane to Brandenburg’s nature. The routes vary in length so there’s something for everyone. You can easily get to and from the hikes from Berlin with the S-Bahn or regional train.

Speaking about Mark Brandenburg, Fontane said: ‘I’ve travelled through the Mark and found it richer than I had dared to hope. Every foot of earth revived and [...] wherever the eye fell, everything bore a historical stamp.’ With these picturesque words in your mind, you're sure to discover the diverse landscape right on your doorstep with a whole new set of eyes.

It’s easy to fall in love with the Mark, as Fontane did. His hikes and research became inspired his most extensive work. His five volumes of ‘Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg’ (Walks through the Mark of Brandenburg), Fontane describes places, buildings and landscapes and tells stories from the region. The Mark also inspired his later, great novels such as The Stechlin and Effi Briest – great reads for your train journey to the hikes.

Fontane has dedicated an entire volume to the development of the five castles and mansions in Brandenburg. These include Liebenberg Castle, which you will pass by on this hike. Strictly speaking, it's more of a seigneur's residence than a castle. Fontane was already of this opinion. He knew very well

The Rheinsberger See with the Rheinsberger Castle gave Fontane the idea for his "Hike through the Mark Brandenburg". On a trip through Scotland, Loch Leven Castle reminded him of his home castle in Rheinsberg. He then made the decision to explore his homeland more and from then on he wandered through

In 1874 he himself was on the water here: Theodor Fontane came to Teupitz by ship on the Dahme - recorded in his work "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg". So you too can ideally walk in the footsteps of the German homeland poet and writer here today. The hiking route runs along the F1 - one of six

Königs Wusterhausen visited Theodor Fontane in June 1862 on his Pentecost trip to Teltow. In the volume "Spreeland" of his work "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg" he dedicated a whole chapter to the place with its Renaissance castle. The writer was also on the road on the Dahme, which you will

On this hike you follow the Fontaneweg F3 in the opposite direction. Already laid out in GDR times, it is the oldest of the paths. Due to its length, it can also be easily divided into two more relaxed daily stages. But it can also be made in one piece.

For example, the RB21 takes you to the Marquardt

This varied hike takes you from Trebbin to Zossen. It is based on the route of the Fontaneweg F4. Fontane also writes about Trebbin in "Spreeland": "A young lawyer, a so-called Guard Assessor, had been taken to Trebbin. What brought him here, whether guilt, whether love, who says?"

This approximately 20-kilometer hike takes you a little through the Teltow today. As a historical landscape, the Teltow was one of eight areas from which the Mark Brandenburg arose in the 12th and 13th centuries. Of course, Theodor Fontane was riding here. A few lines about his Pentecost trip to Teltow

This circular hike takes you in Fontane's footsteps around Lake Templiner, starting and ending at Schwielowsee. Right at the beginning you cross Caputh - for the German writer the "Chicago am Schwielowsee". He dedicated a chapter to the place in his work "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg". Since
