Where once mighty bucket–wheel excavators dug lignite out of huge opencast mines in the Leipzig hinterland, a post–mining landscape with glistening blue lakes and beautiful bathing beaches now stands. Mining has not completely disappeared; it can still be discovered today in the form of various relics dotted throughout the region.

In this Collection, we show you seven hiking Tours between 10 and 21 kilometres (6 and 13 mi) in length. The walks lead you past traces of open–cast lignite mining, over large slag heaps, past large mining equipment and to historically significant former open–cast mines. It’s worth packing your swimsuit to enjoy the many new lakes that have excellent quality water and are great to dive and swim.

All of the start and end points are accessible in an environmentally friendly way – with public transport. A total of 14 transport companies of the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV) ensure that you can begin your hike completely stress–free without a car, traffic jam or the hunt for a parking space. Since some routes offer several options for the outward and return journey, you can find the right connection for you at mdv.de. We’ve chosen the most relaxed option for each Tour.

Ready for a little mining lesson with a cool–down in a lake? Then grab your hiking boots, pack your swimsuit and off you go. You’ll be surprised what the former mining landscape in the Leipzig district has to offer.

The Goitzsche opencast mine was formerly known as the "Leopold Pit" and could look back on almost 100 years of history. Today, thanks to several opencast mining lakes, it has become a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, cyclists and, of course, hikers.
