There’s so much to discover in the Leipzig countryside: historical places that are almost forgotten or barely recognisable; castles and palaces steeped in history that rise magnificently above rivers and lakes – a huge diversity. Between the Leipziger Neuseenland and traditional cultural landscapes, you hike through the local hinterland’s beautiful nature, discovering exciting places along the way.

Embedded in the Leipziger Neuseenland on the one hand and in the traditional cultural landscapes on the other, exciting places await you, which you can reach on hikes through the beautiful nature of the local hinterland.

Weve put together seven hikes between 13 and 20 kilometres (8–12 mi) in length. They take you to magnificent castles on the Mulde River, to lovingly tended church ruins, and whisk you back to the Stone Age and the time of the Slavs to show you some lost places of the past.

And the best part? The whole thing is environmentally friendly – without cars, traffic jams and looking for a parking space! The 14 local transport companies in the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV) make this possible: try it out for yourself and let the buses, S-Bahns, regional trains (RB) or a regional express (RE) take you comfortably to the respective starting point of your Tours and back home after.

For all Tours, we’ve selected a comfortable journey from Leipzig as an example. There are often alternative connections and, of course, you can also reach the starting points of the hikes easily from other places with the dense MDV network. Just look here: mdv.de.

Don't forget your camera and swimsuit when you explore the surrounding countryside; there's plenty to see and you'll always find access to water for a cool dip in the Leipziger Neuseenland. Lace up your shoes and let's go.

The small town of Kohren-Sahlis is known primarily for its pottery. But the old castle ruins enthroned above the houses are also worth a visit. Grimma, the start of this beautiful hike, was first mentioned in 1200. The favorable location in the valley of the Mulde allowed the town to grow and thrive, so that Grimma received city rights as early as 1220.
