Den niederländischen Fernwanderweg Groot Frieslandpad gibt es erst seit 2017. Gleich im selben Jahr noch schaffte er es, zur nationalen Wanderroute des Jahres gekürt zu werden. Er muss also einiges zu bieten haben. Auf mehr als 350 Kilometern führt er durch die Provinzen Noord-Holland, Friesland, Drenthe und Groningen. Die letzten beiden Etappen verlaufen dann noch durch Deutschland. Der Name Groot Frieslandpad bezieht sich auf die Zeit, als Friesland und Noord-Holland noch eine Einheit bildeten.

Die Route beginnt im schönen Bergen aan Zee an der Nordsee. Von dort wanderst du zwischen Dünen und Poldern durch das heutige Westfriesland nach Enkhuizen. Dort überquerst du das IJsselmeer nach Stavoren. Natürlich nicht zu Fuß, sondern mit einer Fähre.

Weiter geht es durch das wasserreiche Friesland, durch Drenthe und Groningen, wo die Landschaft vor allem durch den einstigen Torfabbau geprägt ist. Die Route führt dich auf 23 Etappen durch weite, typisch niederländische Landschaften mit Deichen und Weiden, aber auch durch historische Städte und winzige Dörfer, vorbei an Hünengräbern und Hügeln und manchmal auch durch vollkommen einsame Gegenden.

Manche Etappenziele liegen in einer größeren Stadt, sodass sie gut an die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel angebunden sind. In diesen Fällen ist es einfach, nur eine oder ein paar Etappen am Stück zu gehen. In anderen Regionen ist das wesentlich schwieriger. Das Gleiche gilt für die Übernachtungen. In größeren Städten ist die Unterkunftssuche kein Problem, in anderen Gegenden gibt es nur wenig Auswahl, zum Beispiel Pensionen oder Campingplätze. Es ist immer ratsam, deine Übernachtungen rechtzeitig zu buchen, ganz besonders in den Ferienzeiten.
