The Lake Trail (Seensteig) around Baiersbronn links all the things that make the Black Forest National Park so special: romantic forests, peaks with great views, lakes, gushing waterfalls, and moors steeped in legends. It’s no surprise that the German Hiking Association named our Lake Trail one of the most beautiful walks in Germany; the Lake Trail has all the makings of a great hike.. The 56-mile (90 km) route takes you to seven lakes. All around, the pure idyll of the Black Forest awaits.

You’ll find yourself in magnificent nature with a dreamlike backdrop. The low sun glistens on the water as it reflects the surrounding trees and mountains. The lakes are not the only magic along the trails. Several peaks are waiting to be climbed. From the Hirnisgrinde, the highest mountain in the national park, and the Schliffkopf, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Rhine Valley that stretch as far as France.

The starting point for the multi-day national park Tour is the town of Baiersbronn in the north of the Black Forest. The national park extends for more than 100 km² (62 mi). You can reach Beiersbronn with the S-Bahn from Karlsruhe or Freudenstadt, among other places. At the end of each stage of the Lake Trail, you’ll find accommodation. If you don’t want to walk the entire 90 kilometres (56 mi), you can hop on a bus or train in a few places, to travel out of the national park.

Practical info: Along the way, you can simply follow the long-distance trail markings – a curved ‘S’. As you walk, you’ll come across scenic rest areas and rustic huts, where you can revive yourself with a snack. On the third stage, you can choose to swap to the popular Westweg for a few kilometres on the Kaisersteigle – we show you both variants in this Collection.

So, what are you waiting for? You will be enchanted by the beauty of our hiking trails as you discover the lush green nature of the Black Forest National Park.

Important: Sometimes trails are closed at short notice. To avoid unpleasant surprises on your hike, you can find out about all current closures on the Lake Trail on this website: nationalpark-schwarzwald.de/de/erleben/unterwegs-im-park/wegesperrungen
