As part of the project ‘Cross-linking the Green Belt’, we at BUND für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e.V. (Friends of the Earth Germany) have put together three walks so you can explore the Rhön’s insider tips in the middle of Germany.
With this project, we’re creating cross-connections along the Green Belt, Germany's largest biotope network, to other natural areas nearby. The line is becoming a network, a unique memorial landscape and habitat for many endangered animal and plant species. The Tours presented in this Collection take you to the once dreaded and now wonderfully-green border area that used to be called the death strip. Fortunately, you no longer have any reason to be afraid here – things were different back then. The border towers from another period of German-German history bear witness to this. Information boards tell you about the history while you walk through the species-rich nature.
Immediately after the fall of the Wall, we, the BUND, made it our task to protect these habitats, which are important for rare animals and plants. In addition, there are all kinds of relics of the former inner-German border to discover along the Green Belt – the perfect combination of culture, history and nature.
The tour begins in Trappstadt, a market town with market rights in Bavaria. You hike to the state border to Thuringia. The border hiking trail is marked with an orange-brown sign. In some sections, the border fences are still standing, which are supposed to remind of the border and the "death strip…

Combine nature experiences and "border experiences": From the parking lot at the Black Moor, a circular route first leads through the Black Moor and then to the Grabenberg border tower and the remains of the border fortifications on the inner-German border. In the event of snow or ice, the Moorsteg is closed for safety reasons.
