When summer slowly fades away, nature finds its peace and the sky appears clearer than ever, there’s a very special natural spectacle to watch in Val Gardena: the Burning Dolomites.

From mid-September, the needles of the larches turn from green to yellow, then they glow orange, red and brown. Near sunset at this time of year, the fading rays make the Dolomites (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) appear wonderfully red. The legendary ‘Pale Mountains’ are transformed into glowing rocks: the edges, peaks and towers are bathed in a magical sunlight, framed by a clear and brilliant blue sky, typical of the stable fair weather in autumn. At this time, the valley draws photographers and outdoor lovers to enjoy the spectrum of colours in quiet contemplation.

As a hiker you can enjoy this special atmosphere from September to November either with our certified local hiking guides or on your own.

When summer comes to an end, a magical time starts in Val Gardena: "Burning Dolomites".
