Dense forests, expansive views over rolling hills, unique moorland landscapes and surprising natural spectacles: the region around Osnabrück combines so many things that hikers love. We don’t have the Alps here, but we do have the incredible landscapes of the TERRA.vita Nature and Geopark which has been around for a mere few million years.

I’ll be honest: I often wish I lived a little closer to the high altitudes of the Dolomites or the Austrian Alps. But then I come across a new trail in this region and find myself dreaming about it for days afterwards. Low mountain ranges, blossoming flowers, forests, mountain ranges with historic graves, moorlands and nature reserves with diverse animals and plants – the Osnabrücker Land is an incredibly diverse hiking region.

A large part of the area along the border of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015. The Wiehen Hills and Teutoburg Forest have witnessed unique geological and cultural heritage that’s been preserved over millions of years. Exciting, right?

In the Geopark, special hiking trails – the TERRA.tracks – take you through the incredible landscapes and areas of fascinating geology. You explore wonderful botanical worlds and interesting historical sights. I’ve compiled my favourite tracks in this Collection with which I hope to inspire you to visit my home region.

The Tours are between 7 and 15 kilometres (4.3 and 9.3 mi) and are great for a relaxed weekend trip or post-work hike during the week. For the most part, travelling by car is the easiest way to reach the hikes, but there are often bus stops and train stations near the starting points. Conveniently, all of the hikes are circular. On the way, you can relax at rest spots amongst vibrant nature or on the beautiful terrace of a restaurant in a forest.

Spring is my absolute favorite time for hiking in the forest. Not only because everything is slowly getting greener: From this time on, the first forest flowers begin to bloom and create wonderful natural spectacles. It's the same with the Great Freeden from April.

From this time on, the landscape around

Around Osnabrück you will not only find the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehengebirge, but also flat landscapes. One of them is the Venner Moor. It is part of the unique landscape of the Dümmer, Hohe Sieben and Ochsenmoor nature reserve.

The so-called "Eggen" are characteristic of the Osnabrück hill country with its low mountain ranges and mountain ranges. This is how mountain ridges are called that are comparatively long. This TERRA.track connects two such harrows, which takes you over a relaxed 6.5 kilometers through the Teutoburg

There's one thing we're really good at in the Osnabrück region: building observation towers in the right places in nature. This wonderful hiking trail through the Meller mountains connects three of them. So you can combine a great forest tour with panoramic views for real connoisseurs. I'll be honest

A little gem is hidden between Hagen am Teutoburg Forest, Lengerich and Bad Iburg: North of the Lienener Osning, the Boberg forest area awaits you with quiet and varied hiking trails. The best way to explore the area is on the TERRA.track Borgberg.

I think hiking without frills is exactly the right name for this almost eight kilometer long hiking trail around the Großer Kellenberg near Rödinghausen and Buer. Neither inns nor other sights are on the way. So you can fully concentrate on the green forest around you at any time of the year.

In the south of Osnabrück you will find one of the most exciting areas in the TERRA.vita nature park. You will pass old quarries, in which limestone, for example, used to be mined, and meadows that form the right habitat for orchids. There is also the former education camp in Ohrbeck from the times of
