Explore Austria’s alpine pastures — hiking holidays on the farm

Hiking Collection by Urlaub in Österreich

Many love it and do it every year, sometimes in Salzburg, sometimes in Lower Austria and sometimes in mountainous Vorarlberg: we’re talking about farm holidays. And while younger guests in particular are incredibly happy – after all, every farm has lots of friendly animals, usually a playground and plenty of room to run around – adults are increasingly recognising the value of this carefree holiday. Not least because most farms are located in the midst of real hiking paradises. And that's exactly what we want to show you with this Collection!

You can set off right after a hearty breakfast. In Austria there are countless hiking trails for every level; you can climb mountain peaks, hike around lakes, wander across the many alpine pastures, and walk through beautiful forests. Each province offers hiking opportunities different from the last. Tyrol, for example, has both high mountains and easy Tours up its sleeve. And as you’ll see, Burgenland is much more than the flat, romantic, vine-covered area around Lake Neusiedl. In fact, in the easternmost and flattest federal province, one or two challenging routes await you while even in the high mountains you can hike gentle trails.

Do you like relaxing holidays? After a farmhouse breakfast, you can head straight into blissful nature, down to the river or over to a nearby pond. A concert of birdsong and the buzzing of insects accompanies you on your walk and you feel more relaxed with every step. When you lay your head on a moss cushion on the bank of a stream and watch the dancing treetops, you know you’ve arrived: on the farm, on holiday, in life.

In the afternoon, you return to your accommodation. Take your hiking boots off your tired feet and find the hammock waiting for you in the garden. And while you’re lulled to sleep by the scent of lavender and the aroma of thyme, rosemary and basil, the many experiences of the day flicker in your mind.

This is what a farm holiday looks like. There are so many great places to stay all over Austria. Look around, let yourself be inspired.

See you soon at the farm!

The "Farm Holidays" programme is supported by the Austrian federal government, the federal states and the European Union (LE 14-20): ec.europa.eu/agriculture/rural-development-2014-2020_de

Highlights

  • The Ferienhof Rabenreith is in a sunny and quiet location at 644 meters above sea level and offers a fantastic view of the mountains of the Kalkalpen National Park. The Einzenberger family will be happy to help you plan your day - whether it's a summit tour or a family hike. Guided hikes are also offered. A few smaller hikes start directly from the organic farm.

At the farm there is an apartment as well as a family room and a single room. Not only the spacious playground makes children's hearts beat faster, but also getting to know a real farm. Cows are milked, calves are born and chickens lay eggs. There are also two rabbits, ten chickens including a rooster, cats and the farm dog Heidi. When it comes to culinary delights, you won’t be missing anything here either: you’ll start the day with a farm breakfast – and in the evening you’ll eat together. You are close to nature on many levels at the farm, because many products come directly from the garden.

  • The farm is in Rust, directly on Lake Neusiedl. Many beautiful hiking routes lead directly past Rust, as does a well-signposted, dense cycle path network. Depending on the desired level of difficulty, you can take it easy without any steep climbs, which is perfect for families. If you want it a little more challenging, there are routes over the Ruster Hügelland or along the Leithagebirge. The kilometer-wide view to the east over Lake Neusiedl is a constant companion. Especially in spring, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, the thousands of blossoming cherry trees that are loosely interspersed in the wine-growing landscape ensure a first-class experience of nature. On hot days, you can cool down in Lake Neusiedl. If you want to make your day a little more international, you can go with the
Cycle paths across the border to Hungary well advised. No matter what you decide: the stop at the Heurigen is easily possible on any of the routes.
