‘Waale’ is the name for man-made water channels used to irrigate orchards and vineyards and the narrow paths along these channels are called ‘Waalwege’. They’re particularly common in the area around Merano in the far north of Italy.
The first channels were created in the 13th century and today they represent a South Tyrolean cultural asset worth preserving, and serve as popular walking paths. The 12 kilometre (7.5 mi) long Marlinger Waalweg is the longest such path in South Tyrol and one of the great hiking highlights in Marling and the surrounding area.
We’ve brought together the most popular routes along the Marlinger Waalweg in this Collection. As you walk the route, you can admire magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The varied cultural and natural landscapes are impressive, with distant views of the Merano valley basin and the imposing Texel group of mountains.
Thanks to the great public transport connections to and from the Marlinger Waalweg, your car can also take a little holiday and stay at home while you make your way by train or bus.
