Where in Germany can you witness the impressive power of volcanoes? In Germany’s incredible Eifel region on the 27-kilometre (17 mi) VulkaMaar trail. Rocky, winding paths leading through wildly romantic valleys, massive lookout towers that entice you with breathtaking views, and the rustic landscape and deep blue maars all await your visit. It's no wonder that the VulkaMaar trail with its attractions was voted Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2021 by the readers of ‘Wandermagazin’, a hiking magazine.

In order to be able to explore everything at your leisure, I’ve divided the circular route into two very relaxed day Tours in this Collection. This gives you enough time to stop at the highlights along the way, to enjoy them in peace and quiet, and to have a tasty snack here and there. Vital.

The two starting points, Manderscheid and Meerfeld, are easily reached via the Cologne-Gerolstein-Trier railway line to Gerolstein station. From there, you can take the Regioline 500. Alternatively, you can take the Koblenz-Trier/Luxembourg railway line to Wittlich main station and from there continue with the Regioline 300, which will take you back to your starting point. Of course, you can drive as well.

There’s a good range of places to stay in both towns. I recommend booking them in advance, especially if you’re planning your Tours for the weekend.

Now it's just a matter of strapping your rucksack to your back, lacing up your hiking boots and heading out the door. Have fun exploring the volcanoes in the Eifel!
