With your baby in their carrier, you head to the countryside to experience their first steps through a forest together. There are so many good reasons to go hiking with young toddlers and babies. When your baby reaches for a blade of grass during a pitstop, when your toddler runs after a grasshopper and when they learn up close what snails and earthworms are – everyday life stays at home when you spend time together in nature. Hand on heart: Is there anything better than instilling a love of nature in children from their very first weeks?

TRAILS FOR LITTLE ONES

In this Collection, we’ve picked out hiking trails that are perfect for young families and suitable for a few–week–old baby or your energetic toddler. The hiking trails are between 2 and 10 kilometres (1.2 – 6.2 mi) long and are spread across western Austria, Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Whether your baby is only a few weeks old or already on its own wobbly legs, you’re guaranteed to find the right trip for you here.

We’ve made sure that the hikes are on paths that are suitable for walking with a baby carrier or rucksack. You can also use a pushchair along some trails. You’ll see this information in the Tour title. We’ve also included plenty of places to rest and change diapers and stops at playgrounds, lakes, huts and game reserves. Many of the trails are themed, helping your kids learn about nature, fairytales and animals at fun stations en route.

You can easily reach all of the hikes by car or travel by train or bus to some routes on the outskirts of larger cities. The hikes are either loops or end at a gondola so you can conveniently return home. You can shorten some of the hikes if your legs get tired or the weather turns. Extending the hikes is possible too.

OUR TIPS FOR HIKING WITH BABIES AND TODDLERS

Hiking with babies and toddlers can be challenging, but roaming through nature together with your offspring and spending hours in the fresh air is priceless. To get off on the right foot, check out our six tips for your outdoor adventure with your kids:

1. Don't plan Tours that are too ambitious, but instead venture out slowly as a family and see which trail lengths and types suit you well.

2. If you’re out and about in the summer, start your Tour in the morning so that you’re not hiking in the midday heat.

3. You don’t need to think about any special equipment to feed your baby en route. Breastfeeding is ideal since you don’t need to think about anything else. If you prefer to feed with a bottle, this is easy too when hiking. Take enough clean bottles with you, fill small portion jars with the correct amount of powdered milk and fill two thermos flasks with water, one boiling and the other cold.

Along the way, use a small thermometer (a new, clean medical thermometer is perfect) to find the right mix of cold and hot water. You could practice at home before you set off so that you know it’ll work smoothly on the road. If your little one prefers to eat milk porridge, fill up tins with a portion of porridge powder for each meal and add water during your rest stops. You can bring fruit and plenty of water for snacks too.

4. Depending on the weather and season, make sure the route has suitable picnic huts, mountain pastures or inns. Otherwise, the Tours have everything you need, especially in summer. If you’re travelling with your baby and can’t find a bathroom, you can use any meadow as a changing table, just bring a cosy blanket with you.

5. If you’re deciding between a pram and sling, we recommend slings for most hiking trails. As long as you don’t plan to hike on concrete roads, a sling is more comfortable and can withstand unpaved surfaces. If your baby is six months or older, you can carry them in a back carrier. You can find out whether a trail is suitable for pushchairs directly in the Tour title.

6. For toddlers who can already walk, the Tours shouldn’t be longer than 3 to 5 kilometres (1.8 to 3.1 mi). Little ones take longer and need more stops.

Well prepared, you can fully engage with nature and spend a wonderful time in the countryside with your little ones. We wish you lots of fun and your first unforgettable memories with your children in nature.

The Eulenwiesen are a very special place in the Tyrolean Stubaital. The larches that grow here and bathe nature in wonderful colours, especially in autumn, provide shade but still leave enough light for the undergrowth. This creates a variety of flowers here that is hard to find anywhere else. On this
