As Germany's only alpine national park, the Berchtesgaden represents the core zone of the biosphere region surrounding it. High mountains, deep valleys and crystal-clear mountain rivers characterise this unique protected area. Let nature be nature, that’s the motto here. This allows nature to develop without human influence. With an altitude amplitude of 2,110 metres (6,923 ft) from Lake Königssee to the Watzmann, the Berchtesgaden National Park offers the most diverse habitats for animals and plants.
In winter, these habitats often rest under a thick blanket of snow, offering snowshoe hikers great touring opportunities at various levels of difficulty. Whether it's a stop at the Schneibsteinhaus, or through the snow-covered winter forest to the Halsalm hut, there’s something for everyone.
Many starting points can be reached by public transport. Please try to not disturb animals and plants and be sure to stick to the recommended routes. Wildlife is particularly vulnerable to disturbance by winter sports enthusiasts.
Have fun exploring the Berchtesgaden National Park!
