Germany’s Sauerland region is the land of 1,000 mountains. It’s a place where myriad hiking paths traverse lofty summits. One such trail is the 156-mile (251 km) Sauerland-Höhenflug, which takes you over the highest elevations in the Sauerland. Here, on the highest ridges and peaks where epic views abound, it feels like you're flying over the countryside. But there are also deep forests, mystical high moors and extensive pastures to experience. And, of course, you will also encounter the region’s cultural and industrial history time and again.

The Sauerland-Höhenflug is a long-distance hiking trail that connects the town of Meinerzhagen in North Rhine-Westphalia with Korbach in Hesse. In this Collection, you can hike the Höhenflug on the main route from Meinerzhagen to Korbach in 11 stages. Alternatively, you can also start at Altena. After two stages, you will join the main route at Röhrenspring, which is marked here as stage 4.

You will find places to stop for refreshments and overnight stays either along the way or via small detours to the next village. Be sure to check the opening times of the inns and hotels before you visit. It's best to pack a tasty packed lunch and enough drinks in your rucksack for your Tour. This way, you can take a break at your leisure and enjoy the scenery at tranquil rest stops. You can reach almost every start and finish point by public transport or car.

Have you got the urge to breathe in some mountain air? Then head to the Sauerland and up to the lofty heights, where the flight of fancy awaits.
