In the northeastern part of Flanders, the province of Limburg is a true paradise for cyclists. The landscape is sparsely populated, close to nature and varied. The Hoge Kempen National Park is characterised by sandy soils and deep forests, the flowering splendour of the Mechelse Heide, historical cities such as Tongeren, Hasselt and Tienen, the waters of the Meuse and many lakes, rolling hills, green fields and blossoming orchards – all this connected by low-trafficked roads and bike paths. The regional cycling infrastructure is excellent and relatively flat. When it does go uphill, the climbs are never particularly steep or long.
Today, the historic Duchy of Limburg spans the Netherlands and Belgium. In this Collection, I show you some of the most beautiful bike Tours in the Belgian part of Limburg. In the past, coal mining was prolific in this region but the slag heaps have been rewilded and mines are a prime example of how former industrial landscapes can be transformed into recreational areas. Along the way, you also find numerous castles, small chapels and church villages with a rich history. As is typical in Belgium, numerous breweries in Limburg, often with an attached inn, are waiting for you. If you’re hungry and want to stop for a bite to eat, you never have to look far.
Most of the paths are asphalted. Some of the Tours also include short gravelled sections. They are designed for a classic touring bike, but a gravel or road bike with slightly wider tires is also ideal.
The tour starts on the outskirts of Peer, one of the presumed birthplaces of Pieter Bruegel. Unfortunately, this is not historically proven, like so many details from the life of the world-famous painter. We do know, however, that the Flemish master worked in this area. Some of his most famous paintings…

The province of Limburg can look back on a long mining history. Industrial culture is an important part of regional identity. Many Belgian cities proudly look back on a long history, but none of them is as old as Tongeren. As early as 15 BC, the Romans founded a military camp here, under whose protection a civilian settlement quickly developed. The camp disappeared, the settlement remained and grew over the centuries into an…
