Powdery, glistening fresh snow so deep that you almost sink into it. When it wraps the magnificent landscape of Austria’s Styrian Murtal in its white dress, it’s time to strap on your snowshoes and hit the trail. Never tried it? Then now is the opportunity, because if you like hiking over the mountains and through the winter forests, you’ll love the wonderful freedom of movement on snowshoes.

We’ve put together 12 snowshoe Tours for your adventure in this wonderful winter mountain world. The selection includes everything from short, 3-kilometre (1.8 mi) routes to challenging 13 kilometre (8 mi) expeditions with elevation gains from 150 to 900 metres (492–2,953 ft). From snow-covered stream valleys to striking mountain ranges and white peaks with stunning views, there’s so much to immerse yourself in. You’ll discover the source of the Lavant on a leisurely hike, find the hidden Lindersee lake and then stop for a bite to eat in one of the cosy huts. How about a toboggan ride back to the starting point? It’s great fun for the whole family.

You don't even need your own snowshoes as you can rent them easily. If you want to try them out first, we recommend one of the trial zones where you can learn the technique of walking with snowshoes. On Fridays, there’s also a snowshoe taster day. Want to be an expert? You can attend exciting snowshoe workshops or book a guided snowshoe Tour. You can find more information for your adventures here: murtal.at/styria/winter/snowshoeing.

All the Tours in this Collection are circular routes so you don't have to worry about how to get back to your starting point. There are cosy and rustic places to stop along many of the routes too, where you can warm up and be pampered by the friendly innkeepers.

Pack your gloves, hat, scarf and a thermos and you're ready to go. Let yourself be enchanted: the white peaks, snow-covered paths and icy mountain lakes unfold their magic for you. Have fun on your Tours!

The Black Lord is a wayside cross with a statue of Christ below the Geigerkogel. After being struck by lightning many years ago, it did not burn, but instead turned black. It still is today and that is why it has had this name for many generations.

The ascent from the west side is more lonely and a little sportier than the path on the east side. But also more sun-kissed and with equally beautiful views. Make sure to bring a picnic and enough
