Glacier views, exciting gorges and beautiful high-altitude paths: the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail invites you to hike over gentle and panoramic mountain ridges. In the Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region, you climb the peaks to access the most beautiful views of Austria's highest mountains.

You hike through gorges and past waterfalls, visit traditional villages and national park exhibitions, discover picturesque river valleys and magnificent mountain lakes. The route follows well-maintained paths and mountain trails that aren’t technically difficult but steep and narrow in places. Surefootedness, experience in mountain hiking and good physical condition are prerequisites for this trail. Although there are no particularly exposed sections, a decent head for heights is required.

The Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail is accessible from the beginning of June to the end of September. During this time, the higher altitudes are also largely free of snow and the mountain huts along the trail are open. However, the lower-lying sections are also good to walk in May and October. At the end of the stages, you either stay in rustic mountain huts or sometimes find yourself in more comfortable accommodation in the valley.

The route can be adapted to your wishes. If you want to hike a more leisurely stage or if the weather doesn't cooperate, you can choose a variant in the valley. You can further divide the long stages or use the mountain railways and shuttle services to shorten the routes. If you prefer to carry only a light rucksack, you can organise luggage transport. And we won't leave you on your own along the route: the information and booking centre will support you if you have questions as you hike.

What a welcome: The Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail starts with one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the national park. From Krimml you hike to the famous waterfalls, which pour over mighty rocks in a narrow valley high above the village.

It goes steeply uphill along the water, but the views make

On this day you climb the first of many peaks on the Panorama Trail Hohe Tauern. In the morning it's a crisp climb up to the Plattenkogel. That was pretty much it with the altitude difference for this stage. Then the next highlight is already on the program: first via a leisurely high-altitude trail

The third stage is comparatively long and takes you to the impressive double summit of the Kröndlhorn. Beautiful paths through the beautiful Salzach Valley lead you up to a memorial chapel, which marks the summit instead of a cross. To the south you can enjoy the view of over 70 three-thousanders.

With over 1,000 meters in altitude, this stage is one of the more demanding on the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail. At the beginning you hike along the slope to the next valley, through which it then goes steadily uphill. From the end of the valley you climb over the ridge that towers up in the east to the

On this day there is a wonderful high-altitude hike. From start to finish, this stage is particularly promising. And since you start so high up, only a moderate amount of altitude difference awaits you.

From the mountain station of the Smaragdbahn you hike north below the ridge over which you came the

So that you can enjoy a wide mountain panorama again, a long ascent is on the program today. Lonely paths lead you over the wooded southern slopes up to the tree line and beyond. At the top you have the best view of the Hohe Tauern again.

On the eighth stage you stay mostly at one height and thus above the tree line. This section is therefore particularly promising. It always leads you close, but below a ridge.

You can enjoy this stage completely and pretty much without effort. It's hardly any uphill and the vertical meters downhill are also limited. A large part of the way runs along the wonderful Pinzgau Walk - this high-altitude trail is particularly leisurely and offers breathtaking views.

This is a fairly easy stage to relax in between. On this day you can sleep in and spend a few nice hours at the lake. For once, you only have a few meters of altitude ahead of you on level paths around Lake Zell.

Up to Thumersbach on the other side of the lake you always stay close to the shore. Then

On this stage you climb the Hundstein, the highest peak in the Salzburg Slate Alps with wonderful panoramic views in all directions. On this day you hike past rustic alpine pastures and through a primeval forest to the valley head of the Raurisertal. This adds up to a few kilometers. If you want, you can cover the first ten kilometers to Bucheben-Maris by post bus. Up to there, the route runs along the valley floor.
