If you are undecided about where to visit in Flanders, look no further: this” best-of” route takes in the region’s most beautiful sights from all angles. The Flanders Route (Vlaanderen Route) combines all your cycling aspirations in one journey. Whether it is taking in the view of rolling fields to iconic art cities or from historic villages to beautiful seascapes, it's all best enjoyed from the seat of a bike, with feet firmly planted on pedals with the wind blowing through your hair.
You’ll cycle through vast polders, moors and forests, orchards and sand dunes, as well as through picturesque villages and the most beautiful historic towns in the area. If you think Flanders is flat though, you're sorely mistaken: if you follow the inner-Belgian language border, you'll find yourself traversing the undulating terrain over the Brabant hills towards the Flemish Ardennes.
It is advisable that you take your time for the Flanders route, because believe us: it's worth it. How about a half-day ride through the polders, followed by a stroll through picturesque Bruges? Or cycling south of Brussels through the forested outskirts of the capital? It is, of course, entirely up to you whether you want to cycle the entire route around Flanders or simply tackle part of the route for a day trip.
There are endless possibilities and even more to enhance the trip. For example, an abundance of museums and churches, abbeys and gardens are available to visit; stop in old town centres and market squares; eat at award-winning restaurants with picturesque terraces or perhaps lesser- known spots where the locals also dine. In any case, end the day with a wonderfully refreshing beer in one of our many cycling-friendly pubs.
The route runs along quiet and safe roads. Dozens of kilometres of traffic-free paths, along rivers, canals and old railway tracks, await you too. This makes the route suitable for families with children, as well as for experienced cyclists.
Are you planning a longer trip? Then enjoy our hospitality in a charming B&B and get on your bike well-rested in the morning. So, what are you waiting for? Go for it!
This adventure starts at the modern harbour in Nieuwpoort, which contrasts with the medieval architecture of the old town. You could easily come by boat or simply arrive by train.
The hustle and bustle of Nieuwpoort barely hints at the idyllic tranquillity of the nearby polder villages of Ramskapelle…
Discover the picturesque views along the 42-kilometre (26 mi) Bruges-Ghent Canal. Nowadays it's a peaceful route but for four centuries, its connectivity caused a major dispute between the two cities? In the 13th Century, Bruges built this link without the consent of the people of Ghent. Fortunately…

In this stage, we're going back to the more recent history of our country, cycling through the regions of Flanders that have probably been industrialised and changed the most – in both a negative and positive sense.
Imagine if you’d cycled along here 150 or 200 years ago. You’d have experienced run-down…
Tongeren, Belgium's oldest town, is the start of today's ride before heading into the orchard of Flanders.
In spring, it's a dream to cycle around Borgloon – the region is one of the main cherry-growing areas. In July, witness plantations bustling with activity, as this is when the cherry harvest in…
You’re still in one of the most fertile areas of Flanders. The Romans were well aware that the climate here was ideal for growing fruit, wine, grain and hops.

On this stage, you’ll cycle along the former frontline route, past old battlefields where thousands lost their lives. It might have taken place a century ago but it’s important not to forget. History has no meaning if nothing is learnt from it, particularly in the light of recent world developments…
The finale! At the end of this stage, you'll have made it and you can be really proud of yourself.
You'll have covered almost 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) and climbed 4,640 metres (15,200 ft) in 15 days, with just under 60 hours of solid riding time – not to mention the countless experiences along the way…
