Part 3 of the Dutch Coastal Path shows you exceptional places along the Wadden Sea coast in the Netherlands. From old sea dykes, polders, terps and mounds to old fishing villages and salt marshes along the sea, you'll see it all in this 268-kilometre (167 mi) long route. Water is a central theme during all the walks.
I’ve broken down the route between Stavoren and Bad Nieuweschans into 17 stages. You’ll also find stage 00 in this Collection, which connects the last stage of the Dutch Coastal Path, part 2, with part 3. That stage ends halfway along the Afsluitdijk. There is also an alternative route for stage 4 – stage 4A. On this, you follow the outer dyke, Sédyk, along the Wadden Sea instead of the inland paths.
Finally, there are the additional stages marked A to I. These are nine circular walks with a particular theme which you can plan as an extra day's walk, include on your multi-day hike or simply enjoy by themselves.
If you’re going to walk several stages in a row, it’s worthwhile booking accommodation well in advance. In the sparsely populated north of Friesland and Groningen, it’s harder to find hotels, B&Bs or campsites. In larger towns, it’s much easier, but you should still book. The same applies to public transport to and from the various stages.

The first stage of the third part of the Dutch Coastal Path starts in the oldest city of Friesland: Stavoren. The starting point is the famous statue of the Lady of Stavoren.
You follow the dike in a northerly direction and you walk right along the banks of the IJsselmeer for most of the walk. You pass…
Stage 2 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 starts in beautiful Workum. You follow the 'Tillefonne' this stage. This is a church path from the sixteenth century that lies between Workum and the IJsselmeer.
In the past, this path was used by people on their way to Workum, for trade or of course for church…
Get recommendations on the best single tracks, peaks, & plenty of other exciting outdoor places.
In the third stage of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3, you start at the IJsselmeer and end at the Wadden Sea. You depart from beautiful Makkum with a lot of history. The beautiful weigh house and the monumental merchant houses are just a few examples.
You leave the coast and walk through meadows, fields…
Your walk starts in nice Harlingen. Enjoy the history of this coastal town on the Wadden Sea, where you can see the boat departing from the Wadden Promenade to Vlieland and Terschelling. A little further on you walk over the sea dike, or the Sédijk as the Frisians say.
You walk through the farmland at…
From the Oosterbierum starting point, you walk towards the Sédijk that separates the hinterland from the Wadden Sea. From the dike you have a beautiful view and if the weather is good, you can see Vlieland and Terschelling on the other side. And doesn't the ferry go to the Wadden Islands there?
A little…
In stage 6 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3, the salt marsh is central. Salt marshes lie on the border of land and sea. These areas outside the dikes are often dry at low tide and submerged at high tide. This makes them great places to spot many different birds.
From the starting point at Sint Jacobiparochie…
The seventh stage of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 starts in Ferwert. Take a moment to view the historic buildings and the large church before setting sail for Hegebeintum.
In the past, the power of the sea always threatened in North Friesland. That is why many mounds have been built here: elevations…
Stage number 8 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 starts in Tenaard and the first part runs along salt marshes. Despite the name suggests otherwise, the town of Moddergat is beautiful. In the small fishing village, a monument reminds you that the sea gives and the sea takes. In the stormy night of 5 to…
The ninth stage of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 starts at the Lauwersmeer near Lauwersoog. Lauwersmeer National Park is a special nature reserve. This used to be just a part of the Wadden Sea, but after a dam was placed, the Lauwersmeer was created. The wetland area is very attractive to all kinds of…
The 20 kilometer long tenth stage of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 runs through the Groningen countryside. Via small hamlets such as Lutke Saaxum and slightly larger baptisms such as Leens, you meander past meadows and fields.
The Verhildersum estate has beautiful buildings and a beautiful sculpture garden…
In Friesland they say mounds, in Groningen they call them wierden: artificial elevations in the landscape on which farms or entire villages are built. Because the buildings are above sea level, they and their inhabitants were better protected against the often destructive power of the sea.
In the part…
Stage 12 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 is a long one: no less than 25 kilometers is waiting for you. You start your walk in Doodstil and despite the fact that the name actually comes from 'brug (til) van Doede', the hamlet still lives up to its name. Here in Northeast Groningen it is mainly quiet…
You start the thirteenth stage of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 in Appingedam. Don't leave the city too quickly, because this historic place on the Damsterdiep has a number of special sights. The best known are probably the hanging kitchens that literally hang over the water in the heart of the city…
In this fourteenth stage of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 you can hardly lose sight of the water. You follow the Ems which later turns into the Dollard. Shortly after the starting point you come to the striking Gemaal Rozema. In the background you can see the large seagoing ships sailing on the Ems.
You…
Stage number 15 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 is a short one. You can walk from Kostverloren to Nieuweschans in less than 10 kilometers. You walk through the no man's land of the Dollardpolders via dead straight roads. You probably won't meet many people here.
That is probably only the case in Bad…
Stages 16 and 17 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 provide an alternative to stages 10 and 11 of the same long-distance walk. Although, not quite, because stage 16 starts about halfway through stage 10, in Leens.
Instead of heading east towards Baflo, this walk heads north. First along the small town of…
Stage number 17 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 offers (together with stage 16) an alternative route for stages 10 and 11. You walk through the far north of Groningen, along the salt marshes outside the dikes. Because the salt marshes dry up at low tide and flood again at high tide, it is a paradise…
Stage 00 of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 is intended to connect part 2 of the Dutch Coastal Path to this part. The starting point of stage 00 is therefore where the last stage of the previous part ended: halfway through the Afsluitdijk. Officially, that point is the border between the province of North…
Stage 04A of the Dutch Coastal Path part 3 offers a variant for stage 4, which runs from Harlingen to Oosterbierum. With this variant you follow the Sédyk that runs right along the Wadden Sea. You have a view of the Wadden Sea for almost the entire route and on a clear day you can see the Wadden Islands…
Stage A is an extra circular walk at the Dutch Coastal Path part 3. You start and end in the village of Pingjum and follow the Pingjumer Gouden Halsband in the walk.
This special name comes from the more than 1000 year old ring dike, which was built to protect the village of Pingjum against the water…
