The fascinating, ice-age landscape of the Barnim in northeastern Brandenburg is a true natural gem. On the approximately 140-kilometre (87 mi) long circular trail, you discover both the beauty of the Schorfheide Chorin Biosphere Reserve with its famous Grumsin beech forest and the charming Biesenthal Basin, Finowtal-Pregnitzfließ and Nonnenfließ-Schwärzetal nature reserves.
The trail offers you plenty of interesting, exciting sights. You have the unique chance to visit a very special monument: the Niederfinow boat lift. This incredible technical feat lifts boats 36 metres (118 ft). The Chorin Monastery, Brodowin Ecovillage and Geopark Centre in Groß-Ziethen also lie en route.
The seven stages in this Collection range from 16 to 25 kilometres (9.9 to 15.5 mi), giving you plenty of time to enjoy hiking and exploring. I’ve added in a few small detours to show you an interesting building or natural monument along the way. When you get hungry, you will find cafes, restaurants and small breweries to indulge in delicious food. It’s still worth packing a picnic though, as the refreshment stops are sometimes few and far between in the sparsely populated area and are usually a detour away. You’ll find a range of accommodation in the towns en route. Book in advance as they may be fully booked or closed when you pass through.
It’s easy to reach the larger towns along the trail by train from Berlin. The smaller towns all have regular public bus connections. For the current timetables, contact the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (vbb.de/). Of course, you can also hike individual stages, split them up or plan day hikes from one location – as you prefer. Your host might offer a transportation service, just ask.
Let's go. Pack your rucksack and lace up your shoes. I hope you enjoy hiking in one of my favourite regions.

Although this stage is the longest of the round tour at a good 25 kilometers, a short detour to the BIORAMA viewing platform is worthwhile at the start of the hike. In good weather you can look far out from the former historical water tower to Poland or Berlin. The viewing platform is open in summer…

This stage starts with an absolute highlight: The Chorin monastery from the 13th century is considered the most important building of early Gothic brick construction in the Mark Brandenburg. The Cistercian monastery, glowing in warm red, the old cemetery and the nearby Amtsee are a magical ensemble and…

Before you leave Oderberg, it is worth taking a short detour to the oldest town house in the region: the picturesque Marowski House was rebuilt in 1680 after a fire and was and is a popular motif for painters and photographers.
Since the previous stage ended with a detour to Oderberg, today you hike the…
