Austria’s Tyrol is great in both summer and winter. With magical winter huts, mystical frozen lakes, spectacular views, and kilometres of quiet hiking trails, you can fully enjoy the snowy silence of winter here.

As the temperatures fall, the regions of Achensee, Kitzbüheler Alps, Eastern Tyrol, Kufsteinerland, Wilder Kaiser, Wipptal, Seefeld, Tyrolean Oberland, Lechtal and Innsbruck are transformed into wonderlands. We’ve selected 18 easy to moderate hikes that allow you to discover Tyrol’s winter highlights with the entire family in tow.

The Kitzbüheler Alps are wild and romantic. Here, you can complete a circular hike along a Roman road through snowy landscapes between Oberndorf and Kitzbühel. There is also a great exploratory Tour at the foot of the Kitzbüheler Horn. You can choose from a range of guided Tours too. There’s something for every ability level in winter. Take a look, here: kitzbueheler-alpen.com/en/kam/tyrol.html

In summer, you can plunge into the crystal-clear water of Lake Achensee in the Achen Valley. In winter, you watch the mist rise in the morning, revealing the snow-covered peaks of the Karwendel Mountains. Lake Achensee is an amazing place to go on winter hikes such as a Tour to the Gramaialm or the Bichlbach Circular Trail. If you’re up for an adventure, the guided hikes with a nature park ranger might be perfect for you: achensee.com/en/activities/winter-activities/winter-magic/winter-hiking/#regdl=categories

In the Kufsteinerland, we recommend hiking to the most beautiful place in Austria, the spectacular Antonius Chapel, which was awarded this title in 2016. You can find more information about this special place here: kufstein.com/de/ausflugsziele-sehenswuerdigkeiten-tirol/kraftplaetze-bewusstseinsplaetze/antoniuskapelle-kaisertal.html

Another well worth visiting destination is the Hintersteiner See in the Wilder Kaiser region. You can find more info about it here: wilderkaiser.info/de/region/hintersteiner-see.html

Winter hikes are healthy – especially in the Wipptal valley. You can find out more information (in German) here: wipptal.at/de/wipptal-erleben/gesundheitswandern. We recommend the Tours through the Schnitztal valley and around the Maria Waldrast monastery.

Top up your vitamin D levels on the sunny Seefeld Plateau. Here, you hike through the forests of the Wildmoos protected area and visit a cosy alpine pasture. You can also try your hand at a multi-day Tour: seefeld.com/en/winter-3/winterhiking/long-distance-hiking

The Lechtal valley, Tyrolean Oberland and Mieminger Plateau in the Innsbruck region also reveal the wonders of hiking in Tyrol. On the Mieminger Plateau, you can taste regional specialities in its farm shops along the gourmet route. In the Lechtal valley, you hike along thundering waterfalls to magical winter huts: lechtal.at/en/winter/active-winter/huts-pasture-huts-in-the-winter. In the Tyrolean Oberland, you gaze upon panoramic views from the Kleiner Mutzkopf.

The hikes in Tyrol in winter are as multifaceted as the regions themselves. We hope that this Collection gives you some good tips for your hiking holiday. See you in the snow!

You can discover Austria's largest nature park from a different perspective once a week. On a three-hour winter hike, which is also suitable for children, you can immerse yourself in times long past. You will learn more about how people and animals used to live in close contact with nature, learn about 700 years of mining in the Halltal and the beginnings of alpinism as well as the importance of hunting and forestry. With a bit of luck, you can also spot chamois or ibex on the hike through one of the Swarovski binoculars provided.

It starts every Friday between December 1st, 2022 and March 31st, 2023. The meeting point is the Halltal car park in Absam. The price for guests is 5 euros, the normal rate is 10 euros per person. You should bring weatherproof clothing and provisions with you for the hike. You can register up to the day before at the tourist office in Hall in Tirol on +43.5223.455440 or info@hall-wattens.at.
