A land of magnificent gorges, impressive passes and lavender fields, the Vercors is one of France's hidden gems and a paradise for cyclists of all abilities. Situated between Grenoble, Gap and Die, the Vercors Regional Nature Park is an unspoilt area rich in flora and wildlife. Here, you can see wild boar, deer and birds, plus rare plants and flowers.

Between the limestone cliffs, the deep gorges that wind through the forest, and the long passes that test your legs, a stay in the Vercors offers plenty to enjoy. In general, the roads are well surfaced and not particularly busy. In the middle of summer, the gorges are shaded from the heat and there’s fresh air at the passes.

If you’re interested in nature, there’s lots to see as this landscape is full of surprises. Vultures might soar above you. Roadsides are filled with beautiful flowers and plants like lavender, especially in spring.

For those interested in engineering, these routes include the Col de la Machine and impressive gorges, with several tunnels that were built over a century ago: incredible construction work for the time.

In this Collection, I’ve chosen my five favourite routes. Two of them are in the north of the region, starting from Autrans, a small ski resort near Grenoble. The other three are in the south of the region, around the Drôme river and near Die. There are several accommodation and restaurant options in both locations.

It takes an hour and a half to drive from the north to the south of the Vercors Regional Nature Park. There are also regular buses or trains between Grenoble and Die via Valence. If you’ve got time of course, you can just ride!
