Icicles hang from trees, snow crunches under your shoes and fog rises above Pillersee lake as the first rays of sun warm your cheeks. Before you lies the Pillersee Valley. Blanketed in glistening snow, the valley opens the doors to a white winter wonderland. The 100 kilometres (62 mi) of cleared hiking trails are perfect for your own winter adventure.

Snowfall in the Pillersee Valley in winter is as certain as blossoming mountain flowers in spring. This area is the snowiest part of Tyrol in Western Austria. Each year, around 7metres (22 feet) of fresh snow falls. During this time, you can experience the incredible feeling of infinite space as you hike along loney paths and through silent forests.

We’ve put together winter hikes for every level of difficulty in this Collection so that everyone can experience this valley’s winter wonderland, no matter how old, fit or snow-averse you are. The eight Tours range in distance from 2 to 25 kilometres (1.2 to 15.5 mi). They take you up high and also along flat paths through the dreamlike snowy landscape.

At the end of some Tours, you find one of the region’s four natural toboggan runs. It’s worth taking a sled with you on these hikes so that you can descend through the snow at lightning speed. You can also do the hikes as part of a guided snowshoe hike: kitzbueheler-alpen.com/en/pital/wi/snowshoes/holidays.html

The winter hikes begin in one of the valley’s villages or directly at a lift station so reaching the starting points is quite easy. The Pillersee Valley’s paths are far away from any hustle and bustle, especially in winter. You can fully immerse yourself in the nature around you. Surrounded by snow, you can set off on your hike and start to unwind.
