The Gravel Epic Switzerland is a two day gravel biking event that took place on Sept 25 and 26, 2021 around Champex-Lac in Wallis, Switzerland.
The organisers designed a great course featuring a lot of awesome, smooth gravel sections. That is something quite unusual in the Alps where gravel is more often that not steep, rocky and technical.
Stage 1 took us up three main climbs: Col du Lein, Col de la Croix de Coeur and back up to the Relais d'Arpette in Champex-Lac, our base for the week end. It was a long day with incredible views on the 4'000 meter peaks that surrounded us.
Stage 2 was shortened due to bad weather and we ended up riding 45 km around Orsières, with some killer climbs and super flowy gravel sections. Once back at the Relais d'Arpette, it was time to celebrate with great food, beer and live music.

Stage 1 of Gravel Epic Switzerland (gravelepic.com/epic-switzerland)
The loop features three climbs and awesome descents on mostly smooth gravel and quiet roads. The views from the top of the second climb (Croix de Coeur) are truly breathtaking
Second stage of Gravel Epic Switzerland (gravelepic.com/epic-switzerland)
A short loop around Champex-Lac with a lot of flowy gravel sections. Some of the climbs are steep, but with the right gears they are fine (I used a 30x40)

Road Cycling Highlight
Great refuge with nice food and friendly staff. Perfect base to explore the many gravel roads in the area
Road Cycling Highlight (Segment)
A fun way to get to Champex-Lac from Sembrancher. A mix between the mellow main road and steep gravel sections
Road Cycling Highlight (Segment)
A long climb away from traffic featuring a mix of gravel and asphalt. As you ride, you can enjoy breathtaking views on the surrounding 4'000 meter snow capped peaks. The top section before the final flat to Col de la Croix de Coeur is a bit steep but you are above tree line in a truly alpine landscape.
Road Cycling Highlight (Segment)
The climb features several good gravel sections. None of them is two steep and they are generally smooth. The top section goes through larch trees which take amazing yellow tints in the fall
