From medieval villages to breathtaking natural sights, the GR 49 gives you a new perspective on France’s beautiful south eastern department, Provence. Across a distance of just over 100 kilometres (62 mi), you hike through the heart of volcanic mountain ranges; through overhanging gorges carved out by time and torrents; and discover perched villages, rich in historical heritage. From the Mediterranean to the famous Gorges du Verdon, it's a beautiful adventure that awaits you.

In this Collection, I’ve split the GR 49 into a six-day itinerary, which allows you to discover its wonders at your own pace. Some of the stages are shorter, taking into account the heat that is characteristic of the region, especially in summer. On the other hand, if the weather is milder or if the stages sometimes seem a little too short, it is easy to combine some days, which I indicate in the Tour descriptions.

Unlike some GRs, the GR 49 has no technical difficulties. It is designed for people of all ages in decent physical condition. As is usually the case, you will find the typical red and white GR markings along the route.

Each stage ends in a village, where it is easy to find food, water and accommodation. Many hotels, gites, B&Bs and campsites are located along the way. However, the mild temperatures found in the south mean that many hikers choose to wild camp. This is tolerated along the entire route, except for the last section, which is subject to special regulations. On stage 5, you enter the Verdon Regional Nature Park, where it is forbidden to camp on the banks of the lakes and in the gorges.

The Tour starts at the SNCF station in Saint-Raphaël-Valescure. Regular TER and TGV services provide easy access from Paris, Nice, Cannes and Marseille. The GR ends in Rougon, where the ZOU! buses and shuttles can take you to the SNCF stations of Aix-en-Provence and Les Arcs-Draguignan, among others.

The GR 49 can be walked in any season, but I strongly advise you to do it in spring or early autumn to avoid the summer heat. If you choose to hike it in summer, keep in mind that you are in a dry and arid climate. Remember to bring enough water, as you will rarely be able to replenish your supplies between villages.
