Mighty boulders, huge scree areas, gently undulating landscape of former glaciers and glistening swimming lakes – the Ice Age has left many marks in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. What could be better than a long bike Tour to discover the traces of the Ice Age?
The 400-kilometre (248 mi) outer ring of the Ice Age Route through the Mecklenburg Lake District offers you days of cycling fun. In this Collection, I’ve divided the route into nine stages that vary in distance from 30 to 68 kilometres (18.6 to 42 mi). There are also five circular routes ranging in length from a good 100 kilometres (62 mi) to more than 200 kilometres (124 mi). You can ride them in one go as a challenge or divide them into more than one stage for a long weekend. The Ice Age Route offers a great adventure for any occasion.
Pack your swimsuit as this route is peppered with fantastic swimming lakes that invite you to take a dip in refreshing water. Every Tour offers several opportunities to go for a swim. This makes the Ice Age Route ideal for summer when the weather is good for swimming.
The road surfaces vary from perfect tarmac to sandy stretches and gravel to single trails through fields and bumpy forest paths. A touring or gravel bike is ideal for this adventure, but I wouldn’t recommend a road bike. The hilly landscape is varied with plenty of ups and downs, so you definitely won’t get bored.
You’ll find a variety of accommodation to choose from in the stage destinations of Neustrelitz, Fürstenberg/Havel, Demmin, Malchow, Feldberg or Neubrandenburg. You can stay in idyllic holiday homes, comfortable guesthouses, hotels and family campsites. At some sites, you can pitch your tent directly on a lakeshore or riverbank in a camping meadow.
