Calm and leisurely, sparkling and exciting, refreshing and inspiring: as varied as the water among Germany’s Westerwald mountains is, so too are the hikes that lead to its lakes and rivers. In this Collection, we present 14 tours that lead to scenic reservoirs, picturesque lakes and along burbling rivers.

On the way, you discover charming villages and explore stately castles. You hike past mysterious rock formations and to fascinating museums. Again and again, the trails offer you fantastic views and there is no shortage of cosy resting places either.

There are easy routes to choose from, such as the loop around the Wiesensee lake, the walk along the Wied River and the ‘Basalt and Water’ hike near Beilstein. Suitable as nice, half-day tours are the ‘Wolfsteine’ (Wolfstone) route, which leads to a basalt lake, and the ‘Hohe Hahnscheid’ (High Hahnscheid) route, which enchants with great views and a small gorge.

Perhaps a longer outing sounds like your kind of adventure? The Greifenstein loop is a lengthy day hike for ambitious walkers. Or you can simply split it into two stages and treat yourself to a nice weekend in the Westerwald.

We also recommend the long-distance WesterwaldSteig hiking trail, which leads through the mountain range in a total of 16 stages.

If you want to walk the entire WesterwaldSteig, you can find all the important information here: komoot.de/collection/1332509
