My boyfriend and I spent part of our summer holidays exploring the central part of Småland on our gravel bikes. It turned out to be the perfect way of seeing a lot of new places, while enjoying the beautiful and varied landscapes on roads that are not all easily accessible by car, with lots of thick forests, open fields and scenic lakes. The Swedish gravel roads are really really good to ride and well maintained.
The region is only scarcely populated and also quite unknown (yet) to gravel cyclists, so I had to start from scratch building my own routes. We were based in a small Swedish cabin and each day I would simply pick what looked like a beautiful spot on the map and get creative building a route around that. It felt so adventurous! This eventually turned out to be this collection of beautiful gravel rides, with Tours that will take you some absolutely stunning places.
Here's a pro tip: you will not often meet cars on these Tours and the cars are not that used to cyclists. Whenever you ride a narrow road with lots of turns and blind corners, do keep as much to the right as you can and keep single file :)
I recommend renting a Swedish guesthouse for accommodation. If you are into camping and bikepacking you can easily bring a tent and sleeping bag. In Sweden 'Allemannretten' allows you to camp wherever you like, as long as you do this respectfully and clean up after yourself of course.
Enjoy!
This route takes you through some picturesque landscapes with tiny farms and big forests. Especially the area around Piggaboda and the road leading into Ryssby - which is an old railroad - are worth exploring.
A good place to enjoy a pitstop is the beach at the lake of Ryssby. Remember to bring enough…
This route takes you on gravel roads along some of the most beautiful lakes in the area, especially the gravel road along lake Åsnen which is absolutely stunning.
Here you'll use many tracks that were once railroads. There are a lot of historical stops on the way where you can learn about the history…
Get recommendations on the best single tracks, peaks, & plenty of other exciting outdoor places.
It wasn't long after setting out on this ride that we came across some local gems as we came across a hunting cabin, privately owned but open for public. The walls were covered with trophies of wild boar and looked both super scary and very fascinating at the same time.
Clearly wild boar hunting is a…
Immediately after starting out we found some high quality gravel roads near Långhult. We were here at the absolute right time of year, since blueberry and raspberry season were in full swing. Looking at the side of the road we would constantly see big patches of blueberry bushes and of course we needed…
