The Bavarian capital of Munich stands on a gravel plain – gravel bikers, what more could you want? It’s not only fans of gravel and trails who get their money's worth in and around Munich though: road cyclists will also find an extensive network of attractive routes in the immediate vicinity of the city. These rides are often on small, less frequented side roads with plenty of views of the nearby Bavarian Alps. Provided the weather is good, of course.
The most important route for cyclists from the metropolis is the Isar Valley. Both in a southerly and northerly direction. The cycle paths along the green ribbon of trees in the city centre and the water meadows just outside are affectionately called the ‘Isar Highway’. There, you’ll meet cyclists of all kinds: gravel bikers, racing cyclists and even mountain bikers. Anyone you don’t see cycling, you’ll likely see in a beer garden afterward! Beer gardens are, of course, also a part of Munich.
