Lakes, valleys, mountains, and myriad historic towns and villages define the three lakes Tour. Over 295 kilometres (183 mi), you ride through the heart of a region where nature and architecture take centre stage. The idea: to link the region’s three major lakes – Lake Geneva, Lake Bourget, and Lake Annecy.
The majority of this route follows the ViaRhôna, the V63 and the V62, three cycling routes designed for road bikes. I’ve proposed a four-day itinerary to allow you to stop along the way and discover the rich cultural, historical and culinary heritage. As you ride from lake to lake, you discover medieval villages, famous vineyards and exceptional nature.
You can reach the start in Evian-les-Bains by road, train or boat. I have chosen to finish each stage in a town with plenty of accommodation and food options. Usually, you don’t have to book beforehand. The route starts from the train station in Annecy which is well connected.
The second stage, from Geneva to Aix-les-Bains, has more climbing than the other stage. It’s easy to ride this leg as a sporting challenge or adapt it to suit you. You’re never far from a campsite, gîte or hotel, so take your time and enjoy this great ride!
Finally, although the route can be done in any season, it is more enjoyable between April and October. In summer, you can enjoy the many beaches and have a nice swimming break (and ice cream).
A step a little more sporty for this second day, but get ready to be amazed. You continue on the ViaRhôna from Geneva, and you find yourself in the heart of the Geneva vineyards. Small marked roads and greenways take you to the gates of the Alps, all surrounded by nature. It’s just beautiful! You return to France a little after Chancy.
Get recommendations on the best single tracks, peaks, & plenty of other exciting outdoor places.
You take the V63 along the Lac du Bourget. I strongly recommend that you take a dip at Cap des Séselets beach, where you can enjoy a superb panorama of the lake and the mountains. You continue your journey towards Chambéry, a city steeped in art and history. What a pleasure to stroll through the maze of alleys of its historic center and marvel at its unique architecture!
A more rolling stage to end this great adventure. You continue your journey on the V62 towards Ugine, where beautiful views of Mont Charvin await you. Then, you join the greenway which circles Lake Annecy. This is personally my favorite section of the lake tour that you take now. You walk along the turquoise waters of the lake with the Tournette in the background, the panorama is exceptional.
