It was one of Wales' 13 shires before the restructuring in 1974, and it now forms the northern half of Powys. It's a hilly area, with some peaks part of the Berwyn range and valleys as you travel eastwards. The reservoirs of Vyrnwy and Clywedog are within its borders, as well as the towns of Machynlleth, Llanidloes, Montgomery, Newtown and Welshpool.

Llyn Clywedog is a man made reservoir built between 1965 and 1967 to help regulate the flow of water in the Severn. It's also used to reduce the risk of flooding up and downstream.
Amusing comparison but the lake holds the equivalent of 264 billion glasses of water or 550 million baths.
The area around the lake is a well kept habitat for many birds and animals including recent visits from ospreys. The lake is well stocked with trout and a popular fishing destination.

Very steep with many signs warning you of that, especially the last challenging climb to the summit where you can appreciate great views.

There is more climbing on this side of the Hirnant climb starting from Lake Vyrnwy. The 4km climb can be divided into four sections - the first 1km steeply beyond the trees (logs) before the second km offers some pause in comparison. Kilometer 3 is difficult again through the forest, before kilometer 4 is a little easier to summit and cross back to Snowdonia National Park.

It may be the easiest climb to the summit of Bwlch y Groes - the highest gap in North Wales - but there is plenty of challenge. There is a steep section when the river Eunant is on your left, then over the cattle grid and you are surrounded by a barren landscape before joining the beast from Llanymawddwy and the final 17% climb to the summit.

Lovely smooth road looping around Lake Vyrnwy. A stunning reservoir on the edge of Snowdonia. Roads were beautifully quiet on a summers morning spin. Amazing dam stretching across the water.
