The cities in Baden-Württemberg have a unique flair. One moment, you could be enjoying the enchanting boutiques and inviting cafés in the time-honoured buildings of their historic old towns; the next, you can follow the call of one of the green oases that invite you to take a peaceful stroll. But it's not just greenspaces like botanical gardens, zoos and parks that make the cities of the South great holiday destinations. Even from the outskirts, you can set off with your hiking boots laced up and enjoy dense forests and panoramic vineyards.
To get to know the cities of the – in our opinion – most beautiful federal state in Germany from all these different sides, we’ve put together nine varied hikes in this Collection. On the Philosophenweg (Philosophers' Path), for example, you start your Tour in the middle of Heidelberg's city centre before diving into the surrounding wooded hills. You can enjoy the sunset on the banks of the Neckar in Stuttgart as well as a glass of wine in the nearby vineyards. And in Ulm, a high-altitude trail takes you to the unexpected idyll in the north of the city.
When choosing the Tours, we’ve made sure that there’s something for both leisure hikers and long-distance walkers. The hikes are between 4 and 45 kilometres (2.5–28 mi) long, but most of them lead you along easy to moderately difficult hiking trails. You can combine a holiday in the city with a wonderful, natural hike and it couldn’t be easier thanks to the great accessibility: most of the Tours can be reached by public transport.
