The middle of Germany has a secret hiking trip where even every picnic bench has a Wikipedia entry – the Hümmling Nature Park. The natural landscapes are diverse: rolling hills, wide moors and heaths. Small streams wind through magnificent floodplains and past fascinating cultural history. Located on a Geest ridge in northwestern Lower Saxony, the nature park was already inhabited in the Neolithic Age.

You’ll discover numerous witnesses to the five millennia of history here such as impressive megalithic tombs and burial mounds. In some idyllic villages, historic mills from past centuries have been lovingly restored and opened up to the community again. You’ll be warmly welcomed everywhere along the route. The people here are especially welcoming.

We’ve put together 12 delightful circular walks so you can explore this magnificent landscape that escapes the crowds. We’ve included everything from a 6.5 kilometres (4 mi) walk to a challenging 25 kilometres (15.5 mi). On your hikes, you’ll encounter small rivers, large moors, giant trees in vast forests, and old megalithic tombs and stone monuments. The heath might even be blooming as you walk, covering the landscape with a bright purple carpet.

Your hikes take you along small, very walkable trails. You don’t need any special equipment, but pack enough to drink and a small picnic as you’ll find lots of lovely spots to take a short break. On some Tours, you pass through military areas which are only accessible at certain times. Pay attention to the appropriate signs, don’t leave the paths and you can enjoy the beautiful landscape and observe the wildlife.

This nature park is wonderfully remote and you'll often be on your own here. That also means that public transport is sparse, even in the small towns, so it’s best to travel by car. This way, you’re also mobile enough to drive between the different Tours. If you’re looking for nice accommodation, have a look on the Nature Park Hümmling website: emsland.com/unterkuenfte (in German)

Now you can start! Enjoy your journey of discovery through the Hümmling Nature Park.

An impressive landscape mix of forest, open fields and heather awaits you southeast of Börger. It's best to take a look at the weather map before you start. Has it rained a lot or will it rain? Then note that the stepping stones over the Ohe may be flooded and it will be difficult to cross.

This wonderful circular hike is, so to speak, the little sister of the “Great Prehistoric Path” in the Hümmling Nature Park (komoot.de/tour/465313456). Over a length of about 16 kilometers, it also leads you past many of the legendary large stone graves of a culture long past. It follows the course of

"Kateeker" means squirrels and they are said to have circled the town of Lorup from branch to branch in the past without touching the ground. Nice story and maybe even true, because on this wonderful round you hike mainly through the forest and along the edge of the forest.
