The original Freienfels Castle was built around 1300 by knight Otto von Aufseß (1296–1338). The complex in its present form was built by the Bamberg canon Carl Siegmund von Aufseß in 1701. The baroque stucco ceilings by the Bamberg court plasterer Franz Jacob Vogel in the rococo hall and in the wedding room are particularly worth seeing.

A true jewel and landmark of the seaside health resort Glücksburg is the imposing Renaissance moated castle. It is one of the most important moated castles in Northern Europe. It was built between 1582 and 1587 under Duke Johann d. J. to Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg on the site of the former Rude Monastery built.
Consisting of three formally identical individual houses and flanked by four corner towers, Glücksburg rises on an almost square ground plan. Unlike most moated castles, Schloss Glücksburg is not on stilts but on a 2.5 m high granite base.

Koblenz Castle is one of the last residential castles that was built in Germany immediately before the French Revolution. In the Second World War, the electoral building was destroyed except for the outer walls, but rebuilt in 1950/51.

The mighty fortress Ehrenbreitstein was built at the beginning of the 19th century under Prussian leadership on the foundations of a blasted previous building. Due to the proximity to France Koblenz should be particularly secured and from the fortress, the entire shipping traffic on the Rhine and Moselle was monitored.
Until 1918 soldiers were stationed at the fortress, after which it became the property of the Land Rhineland-Palatinate. The fortress now houses a museum, various restaurants and a youth hostel. At the Federal Garden Show 2011, the freely accessible parade grounds were also redesigned.
The fortress has the following opening times:
April to October: 10am to 6pm
November to March: 10am to 5pm
Entry:
7 € for adults
€ 4.50 for pupils and students
3,50 € for children

The fortress was built on a mountain tongue on the left side of the Main about 100 meters above the river. The west side is the only flat side of the mountain. On the north side are the gardens and allotments that were created in the course of the State Horticultural Show in 1990. The other two mountain slopes are vineyards. The small slope on the eastern flank of the castle is the Schlossberg, on the southern flank the Inner Bar. Great photo opportunities and views of the city.
