La Ruta de los Reales (the Route of the Royals) is located in the magnificent Argentine Andes. It comprises a total of almost 250 kilometres (155 mi) with an elevation gain of approximately 4,000 metres (13,000 ft). It explores the region through valleys, pastures, passes, streams and mighty rivers. Although this is the kind of route that calls for self-sufficiency and some experience in the world of bikepacking, it’s also for those who are looking to venture into the remote and unknown.

One thing to bear in mind is the adverse weather conditions in the area. Thanks to this it’s an adventure that’s only accessible during the summer months. Winters here are very harsh and the snow can accumulate to depths of around 3 metres (10 ft). However, in the summer months temperatures can range from 25 degrees Celsius during the day to below-freezing at dusk. In these conditions, the right equipment plays an important role.
