Do you like to go on MTB adventures with like-minded people just like we do? Do you have fun working your way up towards a summit, stroke by stroke, with your friends in tow? Do you enjoy racing down adrenaline-inducing trails with your cycling buddies? Do you smile remembering old stories on a bench in front of an alpine inn? Then the year of 2020 and corona was probably not your year. Biking alone with not many people at the huts and not being able to share your adventures with your friends. But wait, together with komoot, we worked out an alternative. Although we couldn’t go on a Tour in Ticino in Switzerland together, we could do it virtually with komoot. We set up a relay of six stages and sent a different komoot user on Tour on each stage over several weeks so that more people could take part in an adventure together.
The campaign was a huge success and far more outdoor lovers wanted to take part than we were able to assign to daily stages. You can check out what went down in our Collection:
komoot.de/collection/1039762/ticino-mtb-staffelfahrt-2020-powered-by-komoot. Initiated by komoot pioneer Beat (komoot.de/user/193412189424), a total of six users grabbed their mountain bikes and went on Tour one after the other. Where one stage ended, the next began. From Lugano to Locarno, they explored the best single trails, the cosiest huts and the most magnificent views, creating memories that they’ll recall for years to come.
We'd like to build on last year's success so we're inviting both hikers and mountain bikers to take part in an outdoor relay in Ticino this year. We've worked out seven MTB stages, one after the other, from Airolo on the border with Valais to Mendrisio in the far south. Some of the routes go from town to town whilst others are round trips along the most beautiful trails. Over 227 kilometres (141 mi), participants experience the diversity of Ticino. From the alpine flair in the border region to the Valais canton, sunlit villages in the Ticino valley and Mediterranean charm at the great Italian lakes.
Itching to get on your bike? Then scroll down and apply in the Collection comments for your favourite stage. The relays will be cycled from 26th June to 4th July so you can enter your preferred date for your Tour. By the way, you don’t have to go it completely alone, one person can accompany you. In Switzerland, the arrival journey by train is already a great experience. As a little treat, Ticino Tourism covers all costs for bus and train in Switzerland. If you come from Switzerland, you travel completely free of charge. If you travel from a neighbouring country, you cover your journey to the national border yourself.
So take a look at the stages now and choose your favourite route right away. We know from last year: it pays to be quick, the stages are quickly taken.
This stage is mainly downhill. On the approx. 16 kilometers there is only 170 vertical meters ascent, but almost 800 vertical meters descent over some beautiful single trails and paths. However, there is also a certain proportion of asphalt roads, so the stage does not have the same technical passages as other stages of our season.

The "Castagno Bike" meanders through the northern part of the Malcantone, also known as Alto Malcantone, and touches villages, meadows, chestnut and birch forests. Streams are a constant on this trail. The small hamlets of Alpe Agra are of fundamental importance for amphibians and other animal species. Between Arosio and Breno, the panels of the "Sentiero del Castagno" inform about chestnut groves, the processing of this wood and the chestnuts.
An easy mountain bike route that showcases the diversity and richness of the landscape of the Mendrisiotto plain, characterized by the presence of the lake and the vineyards. The entire route, circular and easy to ride, develops on paved roads away from city traffic, along agricultural trails and paths that can be easily traversed by mountain bike.
