The region of North Rhine-Westphalia in the west of Germany is a place where idyllic nature meets industrial charm and medieval castles meet modern art. Although the state is better known for its cycling culture, it also offers several kilometres of fine hiking trails that showcase the region’s diversity from its best side. In this Collection, we present nine rewarding hikes across the region – from the city of Aachen to Münster.
North Rhine-Westphalia is incredibly varied. We asked local hikers to show us their favourite Tours, resulting in an exciting mix to suit every taste. You can choose between nature, adventure and urban exploration. Marcus and Gina from Neuss (2onthego.de) show you three Tours through the idyllic landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia. These routes are perfect for recharging your batteries, switching off and relaxing. The three hikes by Nadine from Dormagen (planethibbel.com) take you on adventures that include plenty of fresh air. On the way, you pass exciting sights, historic buildings and wonderful vantage points – hiking fun for the whole family. Nick from Cologne (urbanhiker.de) takes you on his three favourite Tours through the region’s cities. On his urban hikes, you discover industrial culture, modern art and historic old towns. On all of these routes, our locals show you their favourite places in NRW and give you lots of insider tips.
Another bonus of exploring our state is that all of the starting points and destinations are super easy to reach by public transport. This means you can arrive and return home in a comfortable and environmentally friendly way. With the NRW tariff, you can travel throughout the state regardless of which transport company you use. Just pick the correct ticket and off you go.

“As one of the hiking highlights on the Rothaarsteig in Siegerland, the historic Siegen-Achenbach circular hiking trail, which is a certified part of the Rothaarsteig trail, was created in Alt-Siegen in the local area of Achenbach. Full of zest for action, we go to the starting point and, as 'Flatland Tyroleans', we look forward to a hike with a few decent meters of altitude. "

“It's an ice cold day and after a lot of rain the sun is finally smiling at us again today. So get out of the house, otherwise we'll grow stuck to the sofa! A real challenge for the whole family is planned, namely an almost eleven kilometer hike in the Sauerland. It takes us from Attendorn train station to the Atta cave, Schnellenberg Castle and the Skywalk at the Biggetalsperre. "
“On a nice, warm September day we went on a hike in the great natural region of Sieg. Since our nine-year-old son and hobby knight still thinks castles are cool, we want to conquer the 800-year-old Windeck hilltop castle, the ruins of which towers over the Siegtal. There are also a few varied highlights for young and old on the circular route. "
