The first day of a wonderful two-day gravel weekend in the Limburg hills. I could already dream of many of the paved roads here, but unpaved there was still a lot to discover. The extended King's Day weekend, combined with the wonderful weather, offered the perfect opportunity to go on a two-day gravel

The second day of a wonderful two-day gravel weekend in the Limburg hills. Instead of in a tent or tarp, wake up in a lovely bed in B&B de Smockelaer, just north of the Dutch-Belgian border.

After a breakfast and after a kilometer of cycling again on the gravel ... Oh, how beautiful it was! :-)

Just like many people go to the Veluwe for the beautiful gravel cycling ... someone who lives on the Veluwe sometimes likes to go to other beautiful places to walk his gravel bike.

My (re) discovery of the South Limburg gravel sky recently asked for yet another exploration, this time with good friends

    Wijlder Rijmweg, heuvelachtig gravelpad

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

Lovely hilly gravel path with several short descents and climbs at a short distance on a surface of a typical Limburg somewhat rough gravel path. Perfect for the gravel bike or mountain bike.

    Gravel klim richting Knibusweg

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

Beautiful gravel climb or descent above Gulpen. In the spring you climb up here under the blossom trees. Halfway you have beautiful views of the village of Gulpen below you. Undutch beautiful gravel road. Suitable for gravel bikes and MTB. Not suitable for racing bikes due to the loose stones.

    Schiltweg - Prachtige gravelweg

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

As the name suggests ... a beautiful winding gravel road just outside charming Holset. From Holset you dive into the fields at speed, where you then have beautiful views of the village and the fields. Really a beautiful road for the gravel bike.

    Vaalserberg gravel climb

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

The German climb to the Vaalserberg and thus the border triangle, consisting largely of gravel path. A wonderful never steep alternative to the paved and quite busy climb from Vaals, which you can descend if necessary ... but it is of course more beautiful to stay in the woods and descend on the Walloon side, whether or not paved.

    Grenslus MTB route Epen

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

Although the forest between Camerig and Vaals is full of beautiful quiet paths, free cycling is not allowed here. This loop - part of the Epen MTB route - is one of the few trails that can be cycled legally. The trails alternate between hardpack gravel, from forest floor to parched sand - or the worst mud you've seen in ages, depending on the weather. Fat tires are a plus here, although you don't really need a mountain bike for this MTB route ... a gravel bike is certainly sufficient.

    Gravelklim Camerig (Cottessen)

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

An alternative Camerig climb over gravel, which can sometimes hurt the legs a lot.
From the holiday park, the gravel road starts to climb slowly, but it is only in the last winding part where you have to put your teeth together to get to the top in one piece.
Also fun to ride as a descent, but pay attention to walkers who are not prepared for cyclists here. Fat tires are needed here, this is not suitable for racing bikes. Gravel bike work.

    Gravel doorsteek Epen - Schweiberg

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

The Nieuwhuizenweg is a beautiful gravel road that functions perfectly as an unpaved and quiet passage for gravel cyclists between Epen and Schweiberg. The road makes its way down the valley from both sides, and then also climbs up again on both sides. Especially climbing towards Schweiberg the stones are rather loose. Furthermore, great for cycling and very beautiful!

    Restaurant / B&B De Smockelaer

    Bike Touring Highlight

During a two-day cycling trip in the hills I stayed in this beautifully situated, neat and affordable B&B. However, it is also a great place for a short stopover, just off the busier road through Heijenrath, with an outdoor terrace for a coffee stop during your ride ... or even something to eat. Schimmelliggerweg gravelstrook

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

With such a special name, the gravel strip must also be very beautiful ... and this gravel road is fortunately for sure! Winding between the hedges you climb crisply towards Noorbeek, or the other way around you descend it wonderfully. Edge rough for the racing bike, but possibly doable with fat tires. Mainly very suitable for the gravel bike.

    Snauwenberg gravelklim naar Nederland

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

A beautiful gravel road that climbs up from 's-Gravenisjes in the Vlaamse Voerstreek (Belgium) with an increasingly beautiful view of the same region behind you. At the top you finish at the border marker of the Dutch border. The road is also paved from here onwards.
Perhaps even more beautiful to cycle as a descent, because of the previously described views.
Very rough for a racing bike, although I've survived on 28mm tires. Better to cycle with a gravel bike ;-)

    Gravelpad Lixhe - Lanaye

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

On the peninsula, between the villages of Lixhe and Lanaye, lies this long and only unpaved trail on the island. A perfect way to cycle on a gravel bike or mountain bike from north to south and vice versa across the island. On the north side, the path connects perfectly with the bridges in the north and south. Halfway through you cycle past a small bunker ... handy for when you have to hide from a sudden war.

    Montagne Saint-Pierre gravel path

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

A wonderfully winding singletrack / doubletrack gravel and dirt path over the top of Saint-Pierre mountain ... which by the way just looks like a plateau once you are at the top. The path takes you along and through various fields. The most eye-catching part of this highlight is the vantage point halfway in the wood above the Albert Canal with beautiful views towards the Voer region, the Limburg hills and Eijsden aan de Maas.

    Gravelweg Sint Pieter

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

On the Dutch part of Sint Pieter you are officially not allowed to cycle freely, other than on the official MTB route or this wide, winding gravel road. Not too bad, because this gravel road rolls wonderfully with the gravel bike and gives various beautiful views of Kanne, Chateau Neercanne and the famous Sint Pieter quarry. Once at the top, you have little 'trouble' from height difference. Halfway you cross the Dutch-Belgian border.

    Fixed Gear Coffee Maastricht

    Bike Touring Highlight

Fixed Gear Maastricht is the second location of this nice cycling cafe after the opening of their first location in Valkenburg, at the bottom of the famous Cauberg. Host - and cyclist himself - Brian or one of his colleagues welcome everyone for a nice cup of coffee and something tasty. You can 'just' park your bicycle indoors. Furthermore, a nice boutique with various cycling swag such as clothing and other accessories. Must stop for cyclists!

    Gravelstrook naar de Bemelerberg

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

Beautiful gravel road along the rocks of the Bemelerberg. They are the rocks that you probably know from the asphalt road that runs through the village itself. The gravel road is wide, grows nicely and is perfect for gravel bikes. On both sides this road can be connected to many other beautiful gravel roads and gravel climbs.

    Kategrub gravelweg

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Nice gravel road and alternative way to cross the village of Bemelen with the gravel bike. Good to combine with the beautiful gravel path along the rock wall and caves on the other side of the main road.
